Metal Shaving Danger
Metal Shaving Danger
Today before we bolt the LT4 intake on my new 383, I sprayed air with compressor in the intakes of heads. Engine was built already, so there is no metal shaving, its all clean. But after a while I started to be worry if any metal piece that I couldn't see (very small like 0.5mm point) could be drop in combustion chamber that would be a big problem??
Re: Metal Shaving Danger
So some of the valves were open and you blew air in there to clean the ports out? Do you have a clean area that you are assembling in? Are you worried because you had metal shavings elsewhere, or just something random that floated through the air?
If you have been clean about everything it should be no big deal, something that small can pass through the chamber and not hurt anything, it may sit on a valve seat and miss a little at first, but it will burn up or get blown out.
I would be panic sticken if there was glass bead or steel shot in there, but otherwise dont worry about it.

Re: Metal Shaving Danger
Engine is already assembled when it came to me. They sent intake and engine separately. They close the intake area of the engine with some paper. Before we bolt the intake on I blew air to clean the area from anything. A few tiny pieces flied and I couldn't see if they jump into the intake. I also couldn't see what they are. So if any metal piece (piece = smallest point you can see with your eyes, not a shot) jump in should I be worry about. That was my question.
