metal chips in oil

I changed my oil today and noticed on the magnet of the drain plug there was very fine metal chips, i pored the oil out of the filter into a glass and there is metal on the bottom of the glass now. can somebody please tell me what this could be.

It could be flakes off gears somewhere or from the valvetrain. Whatever it is it's steel. Bearings are non ferrous.

yes, you could have a major problem on your hands. I was just giving you the easiest place to start with. More then likely you are going to have to pull the pan, so you can find what bearing has spun, timing chain, piston or even a broken piston ring.
