Melted? Opti. What happened?
Melted? Opti. What happened?
So I have a '96 Z28. And Im doing a cam swap. As I was pulling everthing apart, I seen the top of my opti. It apeared to have a big dent on the top of the Cap. It was running great when I started taking it all apart, so it wasnt affecting performance. I took the Opti apart to look inside, and what I thought was a dent turned out to be a melted whole. I know the water pump wheep whole is above the opti.
But is it directly above the cap? and could 220-240 degree coolent melt this like this with just drips?
I dont know how to add pictures to this so i put some in my photo album.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks, Eric

Re: Melted? Opti. What happened?
I was going to get a new cap and rotor. But the bearinf is sounding really rough. Im just going to buy a new one. Debating between expensive ACdelco or $65 cheepy off ebay. what would be bad with the cheep one?
Re: Melted? Opti. What happened?
The other question is why should an oversize cap & rotor with a cheap sensor and shutter wheel be so very expensive? Surely a quality Opti with a real bearing should be available for half the price of a gm unit and still yield at least a 100% profit over the manufacturers cost!!
Re: Melted? Opti. What happened?
Yeah, I found a lightly used GM opti for $100. But I just didnt thing hot coolant could melt the cap like that.
Can anyone see if there wheep hole is right over the cap?

I didnt know how to post pictures on the thread, so I put several in my Photo Albumn. Take a look, its pretty bad looking.
Next mod, Electric Water pump. Pluged pump housing and timing cover. Should keep new opti a little happier.
