Is this the correct Melling Select pump with the better casting??

Also what is the procedure for installing the GM white Spring # 3848911 and also the GM 3/4" Pick up tube # 12550042??

That is the correct part number for the select pump.

To change the spring, simply remove old spring and insert new spring.

The pick up is pressed in. Some pickups are made to bolt on using one of the pump cover bolts while others are pressed in. If you press it in, besure to have the pickup welded. It doesn't need to be welded fully but a very good stitch weld on it will hold. Be sure to keep the pick up approx. 1/4 -3/8 from the bottom of the pan.

 

Thats the pump I got. If you're using a to mount the pump instead of a bolt, you may have to do a little clearancing on the pump housing.

To change the spring, remove the 4 bolts holding the bottom plate on the pump housing, then you can punch out the small roll pin that retains the spring.

 

Some additional words of wisdom. Weld or braze the pickup tube on to the pump. Do NOT forget this.
