Mating up stock cat to...

Would it be possible to cut the catalytic converter out of the stock y-pipe and weld some flanges to the end and bolt it up in place of my orp? I currently have mac 94-95 style headers w/ orp to stock exhaust. Could I just take it to any exhaust shop and have them do this?

If I was to have them weld flanges on, and later I was to replace my stock exhaust with a 3" catback, would I have to change the flanges to match the catback?

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Your best bet is to jam a straight-pipe down the cat. convertor body, then weld a flange on the y-pipe and forward end of the cat. convertor. That way you'll have the proper length/fit for a cat-back when the time comes. Have fun finding a shop that will screw with the cat. convertor though, it's illegal. You're better off finding a buddy with a welder..

If your cat winds up in the stock location then when you want to install the cat back you won't have a problem since the cat back will be connecting to the stock cat flange. You are just changing the connection at the front of the cat so that you can have a cat or have a orp by disconnecting about 4 bolts. Your idea should work fine.

By "jam a straight-pipe down the cat. convertor body..." do you mean so that the cat would be inside of the straight pipe? or are you saying just shove the pipe inside of the cat on one end, directly touching the **** inside of it?

also, does it matter which end faces front?

I wish I had a picture of mine, have to do that next time it's out of the car.

I cut the forward end off the cat. convertor (the convertor I used was given to me; it had blown itself out previously). I cut just enough off the end so I could get a 3" piece of tubing down it. Then I had a buddy weld around the neck of the tubing to the convertor body and then weld a 3-bolt flange on the tubing. I made sure that when it was all back together that it was the exact same length of a stock cat. convertor so I can swap them out when emissions time comes.

Oops almost simultaneous post

If I understand what you have, that is:

header--flange-flange-Ypipe---offroadpipe---flange-flange-stockcatback

What you want is:

header--flange-flange-Ypipe--flange-flange-converter--flange-flange-stockcatback

Any shop should be willing to do that since the converter would be fully functional.

Would welding a flange to the y-pipe require a flange on the orp to make it functional? or would i just ignore the flange and hook it up as it is right now?

Whatever you have on each end of the cat you would want to have the same on the off road pipe. That way you can easily swap between the two.

Didn't your MACs come with a Y-pipe with a flange on the end? They also should have a small connector pipe with a matching flange that can be welded to the stock cat ( cut off the stock Y-pipe)
