In the market for a Camshaft
In the market for a Camshaft
Calling all cars, I am starting part of my research on a camshaft for my car with mods in my sig. Its my only car currently so I really dont want to do a GM 847 or something crazy. I will have the stock stall and 3.23's until I have money for a new ones. I am just looking for something to bring the car as far into the 12's as possbible without sacrificing comfortable drivability. I understand I am giving up a few things with adding a cam like mileage and such though. Hopefully I'll have times with my mods in sig soon for comparison. Future mods before the cam are a E-WP and ASP 23% Crank Replacement Pulley, after the cam perhaps some LE1-2 heads to complement the cam if funds permit.
I have a few questions about these cams which seem to perform well on stock headed Auto's XE218/224, XE224/230, XE227/230, CC305, GM 846, CC306 and Hotcam. Also speaking with Bret about a custom cam, but looking for a RPM range and power level to set goals for. I am also considering a LE1 or LE2 cam and then doing heads to match later.
What does each make HP and TQ wise to the wheels? How high will I be revving each of these?
Which, if any make the most AREA UNDER the curves? And under what basis would you select the LSA of each and what would that do the the above of each cam? How does everyone feel about XE vs regular CC grinds?
I may go a tiny bit bigger when I find more info on cams, but these seem like good starting points. I threw the CC306 in there since its a great proven cam.

Re: In the market for a Camshaft
If you are looking at the LE cams the LE1 is better for you here... It's not the biggest HP cam but it will do the most with a small stall and a 6000-6300rpm limit.
Lloyd and I have not worked out a deal on just selling the LE cams yet alone... but we might be able to figure something out.

Dustin, I hope you don't mind me hopping on your thread but I wanted
to remind Bret about a similar question I had asked regarding a smallish
cam that would be CA smog friendly in a 350. Although at the time I was
thinking I had internal problems, and possibly cam problems, which has
turned out to be a PCM issue, I'm still very interested in knowing more
about small cams in relatively stock engines.
Other than that, what about the 221/227 duration range with lobes and
detailed specs that are recommended by an expert?

Re: In the market for a Camshaft
I have a small baby cam that I ran 12.20@108.9 a long, long time ago.
No tuning at all (this is what I bought the car with and before I ever started tuning myself), full weight, low compression stroker setup (377") with horrible flowing heads, 3.23 gear, 2800 stall, dr's.
It is a small 212/224, .519/.537 with 1.6 rr's. It is actually a good little blower/n2o grind.
Knowing what I know now, this cam was the most impressive of the cams I have had so far and it is the smallest.
You would be surprised how quick some of the baby cams can run.
$100 and it be yours...

Re: In the market for a Camshaft
Whats everyone think of the GM 846 cam? Its been recommended to me by quite a few people. A tad bigger than the CC305 and its not real common. It seems like a good balance of power and drivibility. Thanks guys.
Thanks Cantonracer, I'll keep that in mind, although I dont know if you can start to sponsor another race car in addition to yours and Aarons

DarkHorse Racing - sponsored by CANTONRACER's throwaways
The small cam that CANTON has (even better with his ported LT1 heads too ) would make for a nice to drive 12 second car. I still haven't hit the MPH that the small cam had and i'm using his middle cam setup.
Re: In the market for a Camshaft
I'm researching the cc305 as well and I'm stuck on a few areas and I'm still searching these forums to get a good idea of what I'm looking at. I was wondering if I would need a "nsa rocker" and guideplates if I tend to high rev. Actually at what rpm point do you need nsa's and guidplates for high reving on this cam with a 1.6 rocker? I was told to go with self aligning but was also recommended non-aligning. Car in sig. thnx. ::
Re: In the market for a Camshaft
I found alot of threads that talked about that when I was searching. Its not that you really need them as much as its the added assurance that they are more stable at higher RPM's. I went with them anyways since its not much more to do NSA.
Still looking for solid info on the GM846 cam.

Re: In the market for a Camshaft
Dustin :: Yea, "to be safe" is the info I read on here and also received from calling around and I guess I'll go with nsa's to feel comfortrable. I guess the GM plates are a direct fit so I'll use those and I have to use hardened pushrods. I'm trying to figure out what timing chain to go with now...what would you suggest?

Re: In the market for a Camshaft
I didnt do a timing chain, buy search and you'll find. GM guideplates are the ones you want, the "05" stamped in goes to the top. Pushrods, 7808-16 from Comp will work.

Re: In the market for a Camshaft
About time! If i was to go back and do mine again i would of went with the CC306 or GM 847. As far as the CC305 goes though, driveability is awesome. I get good gas mileage when im not getting on it and theirs no cam surge or anything. Also, you should plan on it being afew hundred $$ more for thoes nice unexpected problems.
Re: In the market for a Camshaft
The only downside I see to the 847 and 306 is that you have to rev the crap outta your car. I didn't want to rev my car very high so i'm happy with the GTP4 - I shift at about 6200 which isn't very high at all. Grease was shifting, I believe, at 6800 or so with his 847 - just not an area I wanted to venture into.
I'm still making decent power running pretty good times. I hit my goal of having a 12 second emissions legal car last year. The addition of the LT's obviously has taken my echeck away but I did drop .5 from the 1.6rr's, e water pump and LT's so it's a tradeoff.
All depends on what you are wanting out of the car - for 12's you don't need a huge cam. Unless your going for sound i'd stick to a matched small cam or medium cam. They work just fine - just don't "sound" as badass as the others.
