Question Manual tranny fluid reservoir question?

if you overfill you clutch reservoir is their a built in overfill bleed off located on the slave cylinder within the bell housing? My clutch is mechancially working fine but I notice a little 1-1/2" puddle under the bell housing when parked for the last week or so. It's not engine oil and not Dexron III (manual tran).

He is right there is no bleed valve anywhere. You wanna get the leak fixed as soon as possible before you loose to much fluid and the clutch gets all screwy when you drive it.

it's doing that now in 3rd gear, well sometimes it will. I guess I just need to pull the slave cyl out and look see what's leaking. Is it rebuildable like with autoparts kit kind of thing or a sealed unit from GM as in lots of $$$?????

I don't think it is rebuildable. I do know that it does come all sealed up fromt he factory with fluid pre installed. It cost me about 169 i beleive. But when i installed it i had to pull apart the hose and all the fluid came out. I just put the hose back on when everything was in place and filled it up. I don't think that caused a problem at all. But my clutch does engage at the very top of the petal so maybe your not supposed to do that. Does anybody know?

thanks after some better searching on here I found that it's been done both ways, I can get it from local O'Rielly for 64 bucks the slave cyl only and do the bleed method which has worked for several on here or for 128 get the entire unit already bled and ready to go for 128.00 from GM. I may just do that don't want any problems. I'm thinking I'll take some brake cleaner to the clutch/flywheel best I can through the slave cyl opening when it's out to remove any slung brake fluid, so long as I can keep the cleaner off any seals. The flywheel is fresh and a new McLeod clutch so I need to make sure it's good to go again.

What is the bleed procedure you are talking about? Do you have a link to it. I found one but it was very confusing to me.

hmmmm!!!! If the fluid is red (most likley) then it is manual trans fluid isn't it and not clutch hydrolic fluid? I know most clutch hydros use dot 3 break fluid and thats like a clear motor oil looking color. There IS a bolt type thing EXACTLY like the ones on the passenger and driver side of the trans. It is located on the front of the trans below the fork. Check it our, feel around there. Bad part is your gonna have to back your trans out to see it. If your SURE its Dexron III (which to my knowledge is red) then your prob leaking from where that bolt is right under the fork on the front of the trans. Let us know.

No it's definitely not Dexron III manual tranny fluid at all. And after tonight being undre the car inspecting I really don't think it's the slave cyl either. Reason I don't think it is because the reservoir is completely full. The engine has been in a week and half and I'm worried it might be the rear main seal. What a pain to pull but easier than the engine. My clutch is working too good to be the slave cyl in my opinion. The entire bottom of the tranny has a thicker film of amber oil residue which from smell and feel seems more like motor oil than dot 3 brake fluid from the clutch. I'm going to pull the slave cyl first since it's the easiest and just inspect. It was leaking a tiny bit when I put the engine in because I didn't realize what the little plastic zip ties were for (holding the plunger in place). But being that it hung low and slow seeped it basically never sucked up air, therefore resulting in why the clutch still works just fine. I'm now suspecting the rear main seal which is a week old regular Felpro one-piece seal. I installed it correctly after installing the pilot bearing. But maybe the little internal seal spring came off or something. This sat were pulling the tranny and installing the Felpro Teflon (3 bucks more than the regular seal) if indeed it's leaking at all. The seal is easy enough to replace just muscling the tranny is a pain in the butt. I installed it evenly, made sure the crank was spotless, installed the one piece little gasket to the block for the rear main seal correctly, I mean it's hard to mess up really. So that's where I'm at with the whole thing right now.
