To manual shift or not to manual shift????

Got my A4 with the mods below and was wondering if I should maually shift it or not. I know when it was stock I didn't and it was consistent as hell and ran good. Not sure about now.

thanks.

I don't think it's a good idea. I've tried it before and my times were inconsistent. I leave it in D and my times are more consistent. Just my 2 cents.

When I'm at the track I leave it in first, just in case I spin bad and the car shifts itself, then when I get about halfway through first I put it in drive.

I've only been to the track twice with my car twice, but I have a bad habit of shifting it manually. Every time I run I want to put it in drive, but keep thinking exactly what you are thinking, esp need it in first to do a good burn out too, but i was wondering this exact thing, once i get going hard in 1st(@4000 or so) can i shift into D, and it still rev all the way outta 1st and 2nd to redline? If so then thats awsome..... Excellent Idea, i just "assumed" it would not work.

Yes you can. That's the point of an automatic transmission, it does all the work for you.

Shiiiiieet.....the slowest my car ever ran was a 14.23 but that was like 6 years ago, bone stock. It was back to back 14.23's too. I don't remember what I had it in. I think it was OD.

Whether you put it in OD or D shouldn't make a difference. If I have the pedal on the floor, my car won't go into 4th or OD until around 115-120 area. Not too many cars will be faster than 120 in the 1/4.

Definitely leave it in "D". Once in a while, if my car is in "OD", my car will not get off the line in 1st. When it's in "D" it will always start out in 1st. Even for my burnout "D" is awesome. Although FastZinTennessee brings up a good point that if you have problems with spinning the tires at the end of 1st, you won't want the tranny to shift to 2nd too early.

That is a very good point becuase I finally nailed her for the first time last night from a dead stop and it spun like mad and I could barely hear it shift. Did it quick. But hell...... I was moving at like 35 mph and stop it and it broke loose. These Dunlops suck.

I usually shift manually, but thats cause I can. Ive left it in D before and lit them up off the line..it shifted too early and bogged. Ive manually shifted every since.

I have the best results with leaving it in drive. You can't shift it faster than the computer can.

I leave it in drive when I go to the track.
The only time I shift manually is when I want a good second gear scratch, I can leave it in first and then roll out a little stomp it and then shift into second, it gets good gear that way.
