Mallory ignition box help, wiring question.

I need to know what wires off the coil plug need to be spliced to hook up the box.

The car is a 1996 and has 4 wires on the plug.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff Owens

Perhaps it would help if people knew the model # of the box you refer to. Doesn't Mallory have installation instructions available on the web like MSD does?
As I mentioned in your email to me, if they have a harness available, I would use that. It's the best way to go, IMO.

Re: Mallory ignition box help, wiring question.

Mallory Box 685, I am not wanting to know how exactly to hook up, just which wires on the coil plug to use. I know how to install it up to the point of which two of four, if not all four are used to send the signal to the box.

I also am aware of the harness, but in my situation money is tied up and I have spent all I am spending on this car not another penny! So the only option is to hard wire it.

Also I have searched MSD, and Mallory's site for an answer and they are all vague, they do not specify which wires off the coil plug are to be used.

This is got to be a simple this wire is this and that wire is that, but know one seems to have the answer.

Makes me miss my Mustang's, simple simple simple.

Thanks again

Re: Mallory ignition box help, wiring question.

First off I would like to say sorry for wasting band width and storage space! The plug I was looking at on the car was the ignition module! I went to the garage to look once again to see why and the hell does this seem to be a freaking problem, and I looked little further down and low and behold sits the coil plug with two count them only two wires. My questions have been answered.

Thank you Shoebox and others for taking the time and patience with my brain fart.

I officially take the dumbass of the day award, for this. LOL Jesus you would think that I started working on cars yesterday, and have not built several blown Mustangs from ground up, many fabrications, and wired dozens of boxes, relays, nitrous kits, switches, etc.... Oh well, guess when you try to over do something and want to be armed with as much knowledge before you start into something you get wrapped up in the details and forget to step back and look at the big picture. Chronicals of hotrodding.....

Thanks again,
Jeff Owens

Shoebox, you trying to drive the fact of using a harness, has led me to go look in my stash of electrical stuff, cause I might have a similar harness form years past. Might be a ford harness but I am thinking I got a GM one from a buddy one time and i do take all these itmes and stash them away. For times like this. Hope it has the right plugs, if not get iron out and heat shrink!

Re: Mallory ignition box help, wiring question.

You can use the MSD harness. I called mallory and the 685 harness was "on backorder for an unknown amount of time."

I fought with hardwiring the harness for HOURS. I had everyone I know take a look at it and the box still never worked.

If you are dead set on hardwiring the box, then call up mallory tech (Mr.Gasket) and ask them for the hand drawn diagram. They have one on file that they faxed to me. I didn't end up using it, but it was better than the one in the box and tailored to the LT1 setup.

I seriously suggest that you buy the harness though. Get it from MSD and then search the board for a post that contains the color conversion from MSD to Mallory. It may be more money...but it was well worth it. I tried to hardwire it like you...it wasn't worth the hastle after awhile.
