making 1 good opti out of 2 bad ones
making 1 good opti out of 2 bad ones
i have a bad opti that wont let the car start at all that i recently removed off the car
i have an opti on the car now (original one) that something is broken inside of it and rattles around when its off the car in my hands but the car starts and runs, just has some complete dead spots at about 5200-5300 rpm
with that opti, the car is definately not running up to its potential
i'm curious, what would be my chances of taking the 2 apart and piecing one good one together out of them?
i found a website with a breakdown of the internals of the opti and how too take it apart and there really isnt a whole lot of pieces inside of it at all and it looks pretty simple to do...
really trying to save a buck here!

theres the link to the breakdown of the internals, not too descriptive as too what is what and what does what but you get the idea of it

i figure i can just disassemble both of them and find out what is rattling in the one now and replace that piece(s) from the other one....i'm using the Delteq and the car runs, so the one on it now that rattles cant be the optical sensor that is broken...
Eric, i'd rather not blow $200 on one if i dont have too!

Re: making 1 good opti out of 2 bad ones
Really depends on what is broken inside of it. The housing comes apart with inveted torx bits (like a socket for torx head). After thats apart, just replace whats ratling. I would guess part of the rotor, but not sure. You should clean up all the contacts inside for each cyl with a wirebrush or soemthing to remove the gunk. On the optical half behind the rotor, i would clean the wheel and sensor with electonics cleaner. If your bearing from the back wobbles, you are pretty much screwed i think from using the optical portion of that opti.
Re: making 1 good opti out of 2 bad ones
is there a way to keep the high a low res pulses and remove the HEI parts out of the opti... what do i need to remove out of the opti now that i have a rear mouned distributor!!!!
Re: making 1 good opti out of 2 bad ones
I went thru 3 opti's. Original - rotor disintegrated/ Second gm parts opti - same thing/ then a D-tech - rotor corrosion (waste of money). So, I built my own rotor assembly. No more wimpy plastic. Suggestion... Put a 1/8 rivet in the first hole on the copper conductor. CD ignitions have the power to mely the sonic welded plastic button.
