Major problems...only when it rains

ok so the symptoms are this..whenever it rains my car will cut in and out, buck, just flat out not run right untill givin half or more throttle.....initially thought it was sucking water into the air filter since i didnt have inner wheel wells or bottom covers installed.I have put the inner wheel well back in and all bottom covers and same issue...except its getting worse.Only when it rains though. The problem is clearly electricall.Whats throwing me off is if you shut the car off (while still driving) and start it back up,it stops but will resume after a min or so. It has a new opti cap and rotor, coil. I didnt change the plugs or wires but if it was a wire it shouldn't stop by shutting it off and starting it again. Also ive tried to use my code scanner at work and it gets power but wont read anything.Tried autozone and theres reads "error".Do i have a computer problem? Any sensors that could be cracked?

hey, my car did the EXACT same thing in the rain. i would suggest a new opti but you already have one. just go step by step and make sure your opti is pluged in tight to EVERY wire coming off of it. water is getting in somewhere, so you should be able to find it. its a tedious problem that pissed me off for about 6months. then i just said screw it and stuck a new opti wires and plugs in. ran like new after that. i dont know what else would cause bogging like that honestly...

Spark plug wires....

Just shutting off the car and restarting won't help if it's the spark plug wires. If you'd like to try something first you can wait until they dry out and they spray them with WD-40 or CRC 5-56. If the problem improves the wires are the problem...

Same thing happened to me the other day, it cleared up eventually. I thought it was severe spark knock at first due to the total lack of power, but I think something got wet.

You have an OBD-I computer with an OBD-II type connection port. Autozone can not read the PCM because they only have OBD-II scanners, your scanner at work is also most likely an OBD-II scanner.

Mine did the same thing in the rain. Finally got around to buying an ALDL cable and scanning- bad left 02 sensor. Replaced it and no problems since.

watter hitting the MAF or water in the distributor or it's pigtail harness.

Always start with the simplest possible cause. Sure, lots of things could cause this issue but the initial troubleshooting should start with the sparkplug wires. Cars have been having this problem since they've been invented and, probably, a large percentage of the time it's an aging distributor cap or wires getting wet.

Since it's easy to diagnose this and it's close to free (spraying WD-40 can't cost much...LOL), start there. If that isn't the issue then look to the more involved potential causes...

Thanks for all the advice guys. bw_hunter I dont have brand new wires but they probably only have 5k miles on them now.I pulled my car into work and got underneath it while it was running and was spraying wires and opti with water and it didnt effect it. onefastmx5 theory makes sense cuz when restarting the vehicle smooths it out for a couple min untill the ses light comes back on.I put tamper seal on the o2 sensors where the wires go into and drove the car last night in the rain and to work today and it didnt cut out at all untill about 3/4 the way to work.I'm leaning toward it being the o2 now. Anybody know who sells the Best/cheapest o2's?

Most guys recommend only using AC/Delco or Delphi parts. You should be able to find them on Ebay from the partsladi.

Go to Shoebox's website to get the correct part number. I think it's AFS 75 but better check to be sure...

That said, do try to find a way to get the computer scanned. You might be changing parts for no reason and O2 sensors are expensive. (I guess I missed where you had a SES light.) Anyway, on Shoebox's site you'll find a diagram that will let you jumper the ALDL in a 95 car to use a regular OBD1 scanner....

Good luck.
