Main Caps??

I just have a real quick question is it alright to re-use main caps? I mean in high performance applications. I just ask because I am thinking of re-building a motor in my basement over this winter. And would like to make it a 4-bolt splayed main caps.....but this is just an in between motor. I will just use the stocker 2 bolt caps if it isn't a good idea to re-use them. But if i would be able to re-use those 4-bolt spayed caps on this motor and then reuse them on my "ultimate motor" later on I would do that.

By the way what do you do to a crank that has just been sitting for a while in a motor.....what needs to be checked--I assume a machine shop would know but i am curious. Also what do you do when re-using stock rods? Do they do like a sonic test to see if they are all okay?

Re: Main Caps??

ok to learn you some good stuff lol. some like to change the main caps i personally am running a 396 with a 300 shot and still kept the 2 bolt mains. i did however use the short fill hardblock upto the freeze plugs. now if you wanted to change to a 4 bolt you have to take it to a machine shop as they dont fit and need to be drilled and milled to fit. for the crank take it to a shop have them degrease it magnaflux it and they will let you know if it needs ground or just polished. the rods are checked then resized and when you get new pistons they will have to be pin fitted. hope that helps i own a machine shop lol i dont do the work i have guys i just watch and learn

I knew about the machining for the caps but i didn't know about the rods needing to be resized. Thanks for the heads up.
