Maiden Voyage was made tonight!....Orange headers in 6 blocks?

Slightly orange glow with in 6 blocks? 383, 10:1, CC502,1.6RR and lifters, stock manifold and heads,24lb injectors, BBk 58Tb, Slp shorties, LT4KS, No mufflers 3inch with Y pipe and `1 Cat, CAI, Tb Bypass, MAF descreened,
Only problems that I could tell that I was having In the total round trip of 12 blocks of driving was a slight hesitation at times which I assume is from the computer still learning. And deceleration popping. Scanned as soon As I got home and only got a P0336 code for the CPS which I think is either from the bigger cam or wiring is screwed or the sensor needs to be replaced. Starts and idles and holds revs nicely. No raw fuel smell. No vacumm leaks. The headers weren't glowing red hot but begining to turn orange, both sides. Car was holding 170*. I assume its the small injectors and running lean??
What would happen if I throw some 30# red tops in?

Oh boy is that build a mess. Small cam, 383, low compression? Yikes!

If the headers are glowing red, make sure the cat isn't clogged.

WOW is all I have to say...

On a side note, did you put any thought into this build?

Only one cat and only one bank flows through it. Looks like a resonator right off the the drivers bank and the passenger side flows throw what looks like a cat further down stream of the Y pipe then they both flow into a signal 3" pipe to two duals after the axle. pulled a plug and it look toasty brown. I would like to see it richer. Will this car run with 30lber without a tune so I can get it to the alingement shop?

I think you need a tune and the bigger injectors. If I'm not mistaken, glowing headers mean that thing is lean. If you're not careful, you will have molten pistons flying out the tailpipe. Don't change the injectors and try to run it either....you must have the PCM programmed for them as well.

MadZ28 or PCMforless can hook you up.

Why so small on the cam? I have a CC503 which has more lift than the CC502 and I'm still 350 cubic inches. I assume you are still stock heads?

the car was the daily driver of the PO. Leaky intake lead to a stroker idea. Paid a machinist to freshen the block and install the crank. PO and mechanic friend rebuilt the rest. Installed oil rings upside down, used the wrong springs perches for the size of dampners . The dampners tore up the valve seals and the oil rings pumped oil instead of scraping and within 1k miles the PO walked away from it after letting it sit for 5 yrs. I came along and bought it all with the idea of throwing a used motor into. My Circle track motor builder friend offered to make it reliable for less than the cost of a good used F body lt1. He lowered the compression and said to run the cam until my 16yo son gets used to it and wants to go faster.

So wait, you have a cat on one bank, and a straight pipe on the other?

If all you're running is a CC502 on stock heads then you don't need bigger injectors. Not to mention bigger injectors would require a PCM tune to adjust for the additional fuel volume - an unnecessary expense.

It should be tuned for the larger displacement. If it ever defaults to speed-density, its going to be a mess.

Leave the 24's in there for now. They are large enough for the limited HP the engine is capable of. The MAF sensor will pick up the small amount of extra air flow caused by the increased displacement.

Only one cat and only one bank flows through it. Looks like a resonator right off the the drivers bank and the passenger side flows throw what looks like a cat further down stream of the Y pipe then they both flow into a signal 3" pipe to two duals after the axle.
Are the SLP sorty headers their CARB-approved "dual cat" headers, that use the stock Y-pipe? Because what you describe sounds exactly like the stock Y-pipe. The driver's side will have a "bullet" style cat with a large triangular flange bolted directly to the driver's side header. The passenger side will have its cat in the normal position in the dent under the passenger side floor. The two sides of the exhaust will join right after the passenger side cat.

Who installed the cam? Sounds like it may not have been degreed properly, or the timing chain was not installed with the dots on the cam and crank sprockets in the correct position.

If your "circle track builder" thinks you have to lower compression and use an extremely small cam to make an engine reliable, he's not familiar with the Gen 2 SBC. Many of us have engines with larger cams and higher than stock compression ratios that are making decent HP and are (or were for 2 year) driven as daily drivers and driven on long trips. HAHAHAHHAHAHA....

This sounds like it was just thrown together and not thought about at all. Also to go with what Injuneer said, my car is a 383 with 11.8:1 compression, and I have no problem driving it wherever I want to, whenever I want.

Also you say the car has stock manifolds and heads, then you say it has SLP Shorties. Did you mean to say stock intake and heads? Injectors are fine for what the car is, you might gain something from going with a 52mm TB instead of the 58mm TB though with that cam.

I am sorry if I come off short with some, but I all I have been doing for the last 3 months is learning and turning wrenches on this car. No thought in build was made because we used what we had. THe parts used were the plan of the PO. I am just trying to get this car running so my anxious son can use it. It is not being built to be a drag car. I know the cam is to small. The compression lowered is not that big of a deal in the long run and can be remedied with the right heads and cam purchases in the future if my son desires. As for the cam timing not being right maybe alittle bit exterme but possible. I need to check the fuel pressure. And I need to have some tuner get inside the pcm and see what the PO has done. TO my knowledge all he had to mess with the PCM was a hypertec II something. Thanks for descibing what a factory y pipe looks like. I didnt know. And thats what I have. I had assumed it was an aftermarket piece. the bullet on the drivers side didnt look like a cat to me. All I am asking is for a little help and suggestions.

From what it sounds like your motor is running very lean. The problem with buying "someone else's" tune is it normally doesn't include the stock tune file. When I started flashing my PCM I saved the stock file just in case.

The 30 lb injectors in your sig may be too big, the PCM may not be programed to run them. As said before your solution lies in the PCM.

I didnt think ObII relied on speed density? Whats going to happen when it goes into speed density?

Does it have the MAF sensor?
