MAF=Mass Air Flow.

I think he's just voting in favor of removing the screen.

 

MAF! is a free mod that Smooths out the metal Maf ends. This takes out the metal bars that are in the middle of the ends. Doing this and removing the MAF screen is very very simple....I did this free mod when I was 16 years old......That is how easy it is to do with out messing aything up.

I did it and my gas milage dropped. It's stock, so I did not think
( Like Mose Everyone else Here) that it would hurt.
After putting it back in, milage went back up and it drove much better.

Like someone said... Try it, if it works, fine... If not , put it back in!

NO. It doesn't help. Even the people who posted here who have taken the screen out say they didn't feel any difference ... "but hey, it's FREE" Get a tornado.

 

It is someone with dyslexia trying to say "!MAF", when they really want to say "!MAF screen". The "!" meaning "without" or "removed". Obviously, you don't want to remove the MAF.

 

I don't think even ws6.com has dynoed it yet so i'm not sure if it helps or not...I can't see it NOT helping....as it unrestricts airflow (as long as you don't damage it during the mod).

I remember a few years back when this was initially proposed as a potential mod. At the time there were some real numbers floating around to indicate how much of a restriction the screen presented. The number was quite high; somewhere in the vicinity of 25-35 % if I recall correctly. I believe these numbers were arrived by testing air flow on a proper flow bench.

In any case, I took mine out years ago. Haven't had any trouble. Can't say what if anything I gained, but aftermarket MAFS are descreened, and well, I'm getting up there in terms of the mods done, so I figure I probably need it by now.

It has been suggested that the MAF screen is in place to smooth out the air flow going into the engine (making the flow "more laminar" as opposed to a turbulent flow). However, it is important to keep in mind that the PCM is carefully calibrated to measure the air flow into the engine from a MAF that is UNPORTED with the screen. Porting the MAF (and probably descreening to some extent) screws up the calibration, causing the PCM to read an incorrect incomming air flow and therefore calculate an incorrect air/fuel ratio. The O2 sensors are then used to correct the incorrect air/fule ratio. So in the end, porting the MAF should have no effect except wasting time.

With that said, if you are producing high horsepower (like 600+ hp) then the MAF MAY become a restriction.

Another point I would like to make is that ported the MAF will add maybe 1 hp, which is less than a 0.5% increase. (That is a high price per hp if you screw up the MAF or drop your gas mileage, like some have suggested)

All of that rambling for me to say leave the MAF alone, you would be better off spending your time giving your beast a tune-up.

(P.S. I ported and descreened my MAF and recently switched back to unported.)
