m6 transmission noises..........wtf

got my car at 63k.

once in awhile, maybe once every few weeks, after a long drive (over 1 hour highway), when im going back to regular city driving, my transmission would make very weird noise after shifting into 3rd or 4th gear at cruise speed. it sounds not necessarily like a grinding noise.............but more like a vibrating/rubbing noise........happens right after i release the clutch and lasts about 2 seconds.

well i changed my transmission fluid, and everything seemed fine since then.

now, just this week (i hit 80k)..........i was coasting up to stoplight, and i was slowing down in 1st gear.......and it started making the noise again bad. i tried it again in the parking lot, just letting off the throttle and coasting in 1st gear and it makes the noise. loud rattle/rubbing noise.

wtf is that? ive heard stories about bad throwout bearings and things like that.........but i want to make sure my tranny isnt going to blow up any day soon.

I have experienced the same thing. If anyone has any insight on this, I'd like to hear it too.

The sound you described from the most recent time has been discussed many times. My car has always done it. Its like if i take off from a real low rpm and accelerate it does it, pretty frequently. What is it, I don't know. I'm not concerned about it because its done it for so long. My car has about 80k too. I'm trying to remember if my 99 Formula did it too, and I think it might have. And that thing only had like 27k on it. Really not gonna worry until someone can decisively figure out what it is.

I think we are talking about different things. I have the noise you describe when starting off in first or second gear at low speed. It's like a rattling. That sound is pretty normal and lots of people say they have it.

The sound I was talking about is at say 60. When I downshift to fourth gear to slow down and get off the freeway, it makes a rubbing sound while the clutch is out. Put the clutch in, and the sound goes away. Downshift again, and it happens again. No noises on upshifting, though. The clutch seems to hold fine and doesn't appear to be slipping.

The sound only happens after a long drive, and then not all the time.

Any ideas?

brad described it perfectly. now if only someone tells me what it is!

the problem blak94 described is the crappy stock throwout bearing. it rattles that is normal. i was told to repalce it with the corvette one and it will be fine.

I've experienced the same thing with my 93Z for a while. It probably started around 100,000 miles. I have had the transmission fluid changed about 3 times since then and it always seems to help. I'm at 145,000 miles now, and it started doing that againg this week.. My point is, your tranny is not going to break right away from this, but it is real annoying and will probably take a full rebuild for it to go away. I also have the throwout bearing rattle, I think all the M6's do. Once I have to change the clutch I waill try and remedy that too...

yeah, i figure ill just deal with it for now, then when i buy a clutch for more power, i will have the tranny rebuilt.

oh well........i just wanted to find out specifically what it is, and make sure the thing isnt gonna blow up on me.
