Question M6 OBD1 Computer Question

How dependent, if at all, is the M6 computer on the speedometer? Will the engine run right without the speed sensor hooked up? I am planning to go with an auto and don't really care about the speedometer. But don't want it to have an adverse effect on the engine.

Thanks!

One example of where the PCM uses vehicle speed is the "coast down" idle speed.... the idle speed is held higher than the normal idle speed, as long as the car is still moving.

What "auto" are you planning to go with? Most of them are capable of producing a VSS signal, if properly equipped.

Ive got a 700r4 out of an 85 Camaro that has been completely done. It still has that year tailshaft so it has the mechanical speedo gears. I am doing this on a budget so if I could get away without the speedo then I could save some money. Howerver I wouldn't mind knowing how for the future.

As a side note, how did you mount your tach?

Ii can't think of other ways the stock PCM uses the VSS info. You could certainly live without the "coast down" rpm feature. You might want to post this on either the "Computer..." or "Drivetrain" forums. You will lose "cruise", and you need to see if it affects ABS????

The tach is located over the dash vent panel, and the bolts go through the vent and into the plastic panel below, so there are no holes drilled in the dash.

I could care less about cruise, but i didnt think about ABS. I will repost the question in the computer section.

How long were the screws that you used for the tach? It is very clean looking and I am all about not hacking stuff up in the car.

Thanks!
