AS&M the only good Throttle Body? Seems no one likes Holley/BBK
AS&M the only good Throttle Body? Seems no one likes Holley/BBK
I tried searching on throttle bodies on here, but the only threads I could really find were "52mm throttle body?" "52 vs 58mm" and "58mm too small with a K&N?" threads
Anyways, Jet Hot Long tubes, Advanced Induction full ports, 383 ci, ~11.3:1 CR, etc.
Phil reccomended a 58mm.
I see 3 choices:
BBK $309 @ Summit
Holley $409 @ Summit
AS&M $469 @ Combo Motorsports
The Lingenfelter one is a waste @ $560! Ugly too:

It seems Injuneer had some problems with his Holley as did quite a few others. I haven't seen much but "junk" comments about the BBK. I tried to search for "AS&M" but all I could really muster up were headers.
Edelbrock has one it looks too, but haven't seen anyone really selling it...
$469 is an awful lot for a TB though.
I'll probably just decide which one to get, buy the gasket so I can port my intake, and get the actual TB later on

I'm reading this thread:
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...=throttle+body
Mindgame says:
CFM = rpm x displacement / 3456
So Say I want to spin 6500 RPM with my 383 = 720CFM
If I want to spin to 7000 RPM, then 775CFM
In that thread they added 22% for some reason, so 775CFM + 22% = 945 CFM. Looks like I'm right inbetween a 900CFM 52mm and a 1100 CFM 58mm. Heh go with 54mm. With the extensive head work, and cam, etc. etc. probably better to err on the larger side though.
Looks like TPIS has one as well.

check here for a ported tb www.tpis.com
100-162 Throttle Body, 52mm, Camaro & Firebird, 1994-1997 and Throttle Body, 52mm, All SS Impalas........$280.00
With a stock base or a ported base the stock throttle body with a TPiS Airfoil installed is adequate. But with our Big Mouth base there is a need for a little larger throttle body. So we are offering, on an exchange basis, a 52mm throttle body (900cfm) with a TPiS Airfoil and ID plate already installed

I have both the AS&M and the Holley. For me, both are OK. However, I believe there are far less quality control issues with the AS&M. Rarely do you ever hear about problems with the AS&M but the Holley is hit and miss.
Check out this thread in Advanced Tech:

With just a 58mm TB he got 33rwhp/11rwtq. Add in the cut-out, and he got an ADDITIONAL 14rwhp/18rwtq.
I think he ought to just get an RPM activated switch to open up the cut-out at 3800 RPM

Thought I'd add to this topic with some realworld experience. Recently tuned a high mileage (135K) 94Z with a very nice heads and cam package (cc306-ish)
I tuned the car with dual widebands to the proper AFR and timing with 48mm (stock) throttlebody.
Then the owner changed to a 58mm TB on the Dyno - much to my suprise the MAF did not take care of the additional air to meter, the car actually ran richer- I tuned the AFR to the same as the 48mm and the gains were 20+ rwtq and Hp.

I currently have the ASM 54mm TB. Good piece, and I'm happy with it. I've also had the Holley 52mm and I really liked it. I sold it, and went with the Holley 58mm. That's when problems with the opening and closing of the blades started. So, I sent it back, and got the ASM 54mm
