Exclamation M.A.F screen removing

Has anybody removed the screen before the M.A.F sencer I read that it will increase horsepower and is it worth doing?{1994 camaro z-28 convertible Black car Black top, Very Rare In Canada}

Re: M.A.F screen removing

Do a search, many people think it can actually hurt performance now. Along with porting it.

Leave the screen and never touch the MAF again unless you are making SERIOUS power. There are no real gains to be had from it.

I read in a Hot Rod book that they removed it and it made a major difference in air intake C.F.M

Re: M.A.F screen removing

This another mod i have done when it was popular to do so--Kinda this weeks mod to do--and as with many of my free mods found out later that people were saying( now) to leave it alone. Heard that it mess with the factory calibration etc. Some aftermarket tuners ask if the screen is removed-if my wife hadnt threw mine away i might have put mine back-Cant say if i gained anything with it gone--Its been debated by more knowledgable mechanics if its worth it-Dwayne

Your intake is a little louder with the screen removed. I did it, lost 3mpg, gained now power. I then ported my MAF and it was about the same as it was before i screened it. I got a tune for the ported MAF too, but i think that you should just leave it alone. Hell I'll trade you my ported MAF for your untouched stock one.

Maybe it was on a 3rd Gen MAF setup.... that MAF had both inlet and outlet screens, actually made out of wire mesh, and the entire MAF was horribly undersized, with huge cooling fins blocking the air flow. Removing both screens and the cooling fins made a big difference. But that's not the case with the much larger MAF used in the 4th Gens.

If you really have your heart set on proving what a good mod it is, the screen comes out of your 94 by removing a small wire spring ring that holds it in. That way, if you don't like the results, you can put it back in.

Re: M.A.F screen removing

I did it after reading and article in CHP or GMHTP or something of the likes. They claimed , after talking to a common 4th gen vendor, that the LT1 runs a little rich to begin with and that if you removed the screen the extra air flow would compensate and lean it out a bit. Well, It was the first thing I did and after I did it, my car had a slight stumble to it and there was no power to be had from it. I have heard these MAFs can support over 400 hp with enough air flow to the engine. Ever checked the price to replace ? I would leave it alone as I wish my dumbass would have!

Re: M.A.F screen removing

My car seems quicker to respond to the throttle with it off, and runs great. I don't like the idea of a screen slowing down the airflow, the sensors work fine with it off, thats just what ive experienced with my car.. Kris
