LT4 starter Vs. LT1 starter....need help

i got my camaro about 4 months ago and when i got it there was a starter problem so i went out and got a new autolite starter for it to see if it would solve my problem. it didnt i have gone through 3 of those starters in 3 weeks. all the wires and electrical are perfect. after the starter is put in ill be drive and ill shut my car off and when i go to turn it back on sometimes it just clicks hella time before it starts. and the batteries fine so is the flywheel. someone suggested i should maybe get an LT4 starter to solve my problem. or put thermal cool wrap around my starter so it doesnt get warm from the exhaust. if you have suggestions how to fix it let me know

Correct me if I'm wrong but there are many people making sick power and still using thier stocker. Before you go pay for the now more expensive LT4 starter you should get to the bottom of whats happening with the stocker. Good luck bro.

I thought they were the same thing? If you're getting a new starter I'd HIGHLY recommend a brand new AC Delco unit. That way if it fries, you've got a warranty on a QUALITY part.

Sounds to me like it's overheating but you said you wrapped it with heat wrap.. hmm

You should investigate why it's breaking before putting in a ore expensive one which will probably break again. I've seen a car that did this once and it turned out that it gets hydrolocked because of a passing injector or something.

I think on the F-body they are different.
But, I know on the Y-body they are the same starter -- my '92 LT1 Corvette has the exact same starter that a '96 LT4 Corvette has -- same part number.

Chances are your starter isn't broken. The little wire that runs down to the starter is the trigger wire. It is controlled by a relay behind the glove box. I had the exact same problem. I don't have my manual close at hand , but look up the wiring diagram and you will find it. If you look behind the glove box there will be 2 relays right next to eachother, I can't exactly remember, but it's one of those. My relay went bad sitting in my drive way took me a couple of starters before I started using my head and found the problem. The LT-4 starter is really cool (it's a high torque mini starter), I bought one after the factory starter died.
Good Luck

Years ago, the LT4 starter was cheaper also, but everyone was buying them, now the price went up.

I broke 3 LT1 starters in a year...Actually cracked the cases...Checked the flexplate and it was/is fine..Motor is 11.2:1 383...Just switched to an LT4 with a 1/32" shim and so far so good...we'll see...It was also the only one, besides the stocker, that would clear my Kooks LTs...
