LT4 Starter Install

I have an LT4 starter and tried to install it some time back ago. I got my old starter out just fine but could not get the LT4 starter in. I noticed it was just a bit bigger than the LT1 starter (or so I remember that) but I could not finagle it through the exhaust. I have MAC shorties and a BORLA exhaust, which wasn't there the last time I had to change a starter.

Would dropping the exhaust be mandatory at this point? Or am I just bad at angling the stuff? I've done plenty of work under the car before and found ways to get things through weird angles.

Anyone else drop the exhaust?

I had the car up high enough to get me under it, and I've done plenty of work under it. I thought it definitely had to do with the shorties and y-pipe.

I had to drop mine just to get the old starter out. Didn't seem to matter which angle I tried removing it that thing just wasn't coming out, not a big deal only took a couple of minutes. My setup was completely stock at the time.

a stepped header gets bigger as you move further down the pipe. example would be 1 3/4 to 1 7/8

Yep, thats it. Thats what Im running now, and i can see a starter upgrade in the near future..And wasn't for sure if the LT4 starter would fit.

i've got mac mids and if i remember correct i had to drop the y-pipe to get it in, and also i had to put a dent in the header because the one bolt that holds the starter together was right against it. hope you dont have to go those lengths

LT4 wouldn't fit with my Jet-hot LT's. Would have required to seriously dent my headers.

That is weird. My 94 had Jet Hots and a LT4 starter. No issue whatsoever.
