Re: Lt4 Hotcam Whats Everybodies Opinion?????

I think it is a pretty decent middle of the road cam. I have the LT4 hot cam in my 96SS which is my daily driver. I drive the car 60 miles a day. Car has numerous other mods including some killer heads which brings the hp to 399 rwhp. Car runs 12.4 at 114mph at the track. It's a decent running hot cam car. However, what is still nice about it being a daily driver (with 4.11 gears) is that I still get 25 mpg on the highway. Considering the car is faster than most on the road, gets good mileage, and is very reliable (cam has been in the car for 100,000 miles!!!) I'd say it's a good cam for those who want some decent power but don't want to sacrafice too much of the "daily driver".

Re: Lt4 Hotcam Whats Everybodies Opinion?????

It's a good cam for a daily driver. it will still have good low end, but with ported heads and a HOTcam I was shifting my car at 6200 and it was making power all the way there. Not only that it got 22 mpg (through a stalled auto) on a trip that was 75% highway and 25% city driving. I put a Random Technologies high flow catalytic converter on, and the car passed emmissions no problem.

The ported heads that were on the car were my first attempt at a port job, and with them the car made 333 rwhp on a Superflow dyno. I would recommend paying someone who knows what they are doing to port your heads, and you'll pick up some more power. I'm not real sure how much lower a Superflow reads than a Dynojet, but some have told me they've tried both and the Superflow reads 15-25 rwhp lower. Regardless it was good for an 8.1 @87 in the 1/8th at a track that's generally regarded as a slow track. I did not have the chance to take it to the 1/4 mile before I started having problems. The car did surprise quite a few people- I pulled a guy with a 97 Z28, exhaust and a 100 shot. I was able to beat my friends 94 Supra twin turbo with bolt ons (BPU) on the interstate.

Anyway the car was a blast to drive. The exhaust had a nice lope to it, and I got compliments on the sound really often. I didn't have any cam surge, and it was easy to live with driving every day. Plus it had some good power when I opened it up. The cam gets bashed some around here, but if you don't want to go all out it's a fine choice.

Re: Lt4 Hotcam Whats Everybodies Opinion?????

Like Brent said, it's a good middle of the road cam. My car with the hotcam and some "unknown" ported heads made 345/360 to the wheels with the hotcam (bought it like that). It's driveability is outstanding though. For a daily driver car it's hard to beat the hotcam, really nice street manners.

Brent, you say you got 399 RWHP out of your setup?!?!? Those heads must be incredible. That's amazing.

Re: Lt4 Hotcam Whats Everybodies Opinion?????

I just installed it and it a nice cam no change in driveability from the stock except i have way more power beat an ls1 ss two nights ago. madz28 did a good job with the tune. Kinda wish i got an xe 224/230 cam. overall it's a good step up from stock if you have emissions. look for people selling them on here it'll be cheaper.

Yes, I don't think it is normal The 399 rwhp was one dyno run (highest) but several others were in the 380 rwhp and above range. Also, the track mph of 115+ for a 3800+ lbs backs up the dyno.

The heads are real good. They are stock heads which were CNC ported at a cost of $1800... the $1800 was just for the labor part.

I've got a couple emails since I posted this so I'll just put the mods here...

AS&M 1 3/4" 94/95 style ceramic coated headers.
LT4 HOT cam
CNC ported heads
1.6 roller rockers
52mm throttle body
Custom y-pipe with dual cats going into SLP 2 OTL factory SS exhaust
K&N FIPK
Custom PCM tune

That is pretty much it for the power adding mods. Car just runs well I guess

Oh, about the 25 mpg... it's a 6 speed and I got 25 mpg while driving on the interstate at about 80 mph. Normal driving around town and back and forth to work I get about 20 mpg.

Car now has Hooker long tubes, Mufflex 4" exhaust, Holley 58mm tb and further tuning. I believe it is actually faster now but have no proof/dyno runs so will stick with the older stats with the older mods

Good grief man, that's one well running combo. That's impressive, to say the least.

Thanks! Yeah, it is a bit of an oddity I suppose. I've got a number of local buds who have LT1 Camaros. One just finished a 383 with ported heads, long tubes, Mufflex, all the goods. My one buddy who has driven both my car and his thinks that mine is still faster. I'm not sure and it doesn't matter... that good engine is coming out and being replaced with a 396

Re: Lt4 Hotcam Whats Everybodies Opinion?????

Brent94Z,
What kind of 60 did you pull on your 12.4 run? When my car was an auto I ran a best of 12.41 @ 109 with a 1.73 sixty. Since then I have had my T/A converted to an M6 and dyno tuned, I pulled 373 hp and 364 torque. All other mods are the same including the LT4 hotcam and stock ported heads. I am hoping to go high 11s in the 1/4 with a hotcam. With your 114 MPH I think you can run better than 12.4. Nice numbers!!

Not sure of the 60' time. I have the time slips around here somewhere but don't know where at the moment. DOH! This run was done by the previous owner, not myself. I have run 112+ mph down here in Florida with a fried clutch so I don't doubt that he did run the 115mph trap speed. He was using drag radials as well. If I find the timeslip, I'll get back with ya!

I've got a couple spare engines and have a 94Z convertible (currently mostly stock) with 94k miles on it. Will rebuild an engine and have one ready to drop in the 94Z Plus, the heads are so good that I really hate to give them up. They cost more than most but the results are impressive and IMO make them worth their higher than normal cost. I'm afraid that if I sold them I wouldn't be able to replace them! On a side note though, if you are looking for some good heads, I have some that used to belong to Jordon Musser and he ran 120+ mph n/a with these heads. They have a recent valve job and were run less than 5,000 miles when something went wrong in my bud's engine (he bought them from me after I bought them from Jordon and never used them!) which completely broke a couple roller rockers and cracked at least one valve guide. So, while they are good heads, I know a couple valve guides need to be repaired. If these might interest you, shoot me an email and I'll see what my buddy wants to do. I know he wants to get rid of them because could use the money so I'm sure he'll sell them pretty cheap. They were $1500 or so and I know he won't give them away but he does want to get rid of them. I had them flowed and have the numbers here somewhere. Since I'm not willing to part with mine, these might work for ya
