LT4 Hot cam vs. 218/224 vs. 224/230

Rebuilding the motor this winter and I am having a hard time deciding which cam to go with. I have narrowed it down to these three cams. I am looking for a cam that makes good power and will not sacrifice gas mileage too much since this is my daily driver. I probably won't p&p the heads since I am on a budget. So which cam would be good for my setup? I also have jet hot LTs, hooker catback, midwest 2800, cutout and 3.42s. I am leaning towards the 224/230, what do you guys think? Help me out here.

I would go with the XE 224/230 as well. I have had the cam and it runs, sounds and performs really well.

How well would the 224/230 work with stock heads running through a stock automatic? I wanna put a Cam in for more power around town, and I dont plan on going to the track really, at least not for a while. So I dont really want to put in a stall. Would it work with the stock trans?

Funina - great sounding car!

Anyone else have experience with the 218/224 and the 224/230? I would like to keep away from the lt4 hot cam and go with something more aggressive and keep drivability.

Interested in above post about stock heads..does the 224/230 NEED p&p heads? Obviously it would help, or is the 218/224 better for stock heads?

I have a 224/230 in my car. It is an auto with stock heads and a very small stall. I drove it daily for a year (snow and all). There is no way I would go smaller. I have not had any trouble with driveability.

Re: LT4 Hot cam vs. 218/224 vs. 224/230

Just put my 224/230 in this weekend on stock heads (M6 car) and it idles great on my OBD1-conversion bolton tune and pulls like a raped ape up top compared to just my LTs. I love it and I would not go smaller... I have a feeling once I get it tuned at idle the loping will be just about nonexistent since its not very noticeable at all at anything more than 800 rpms.

I was going to replace the timing chain while I am down there, but there isn't a whole lot of choices for a 94 and I don't want to convert to OBD II, so if I buy a new GM timing chain will that handle this cam?

I am using a new stock replacement timing chain with my 224/239 cam. It has worked great for 10,000 miles (including track passes and hard street driving). Timing chain failures are pretty rare on new timing chains. Most failures are on high mileage timing chains.

Was also wondering what kind of rockers, lifters and springs to use. I was thinking about using all the parts that the lt4 hot cam comes with minus the cam. Would that work? If not direct me to what would be good, but not too expensive.

Cant use the hotcam kit springs with any XE cams. You need better springs.

I used EX612 springs with Pro Mag NSA 1.6 rockers.

Re: LT4 Hot cam vs. 218/224 vs. 224/230

As you can see in my sig I have the 224/230 as well and love it!!! I have stock heads with a M6 and have no driving issues. Pulls like a mother to 6000 then falls right off. I went with Crane 1.6SA rr's and the Crane 10308 double spring kit ( requires no machining and comes with shims, locks and retainers ). You will need a good tune with it....I had pcmforless do mine and Alvin did a awesom job.. Only time to the track with a **** poor driver ( me ) got me a 12.78@107 with 3:23 gears. I've heard it's as big as you want to go with stock heads and really puts down some good numbers with heads....guess I'll find that out next spring...going to have Lloyd do some heads for me over the Winter. Anyway a very good choice of cam IMO...

Re: LT4 Hot cam vs. 218/224 vs. 224/230

I dunno I think the hotcam is a great cam that will be faster then both of those cams, because of its slow ramps it'll act like a bigger cam down low as in not as much power right away, but it will rev and make power to about 6500rpm or so without falling off, I can't say the same thing for those XE cams mentioned, they will sound like smaller cams at idle, have more power down low but fall off immediately after about 5800-6100rpm tops which = less peal power and less track times as a result of lower rpm shifts and inertia at the track.
