Lt4 hot cam kit?

I did a search this morning, but couldn't find the answer to my questions. It turns out my budget is cut in half, so I can't spend the $6,000 I wanted to on my motor. OK, first question, does the computer need to be reprogrammed after this swap? Also, is a higher stall converter needed? I know that noth of these would nicely compliment the swap, but I'm not really a cam guy. My other question is does this do well with nitrous? Is there another cam that I should look into for stock or mildly mildly ported heads? The thing I liked about the hotcam kit is that everything is there and there is no guess work as to what parts go with it and what all you need. TIA for replys guys.

Programming after Hotcam swap - preferred not required.

Convertor - preferred not required. 2800 would work great though.

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

Any other cam recommendations? Chances are this will see some nitrous. I mean for cryin out loud my mom has a best time of 12.336 in a fwd GTX. I need to at least get close to her in stead of running almost 2 seconds slower lol.

I have heard of guys running the cc306 on stock heads, but due to the high rev nature of that cam, better springs are always recommended. As far as n20 is concerned, guys are having good luck with an f13 or f14 cam, or a tr224 on a 114 lsa. If you do go with the lt4 kit, scrap the hotcam and go bigger.

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

I did look into the LE combos. With all of the corresponding parts he told me to get, it was going to be around $4000 in parts for all new stuff. I am thinking now to just do cam, converter and gears. Also I want to replace my opti. I am also having my block checked out and then if it needs rebuilt I am going with a forged setup from summit for $530 and returning my felpro gaskets from autozone for $200. But I just bought some ceramic coated headers for a good price off of ebay, and i'm going to hollow out my converter and run that, so I'll have a full exhaust. I am also going to get mail order tuning just have to get al my stuff figured out so I only buy stuff once. Lloyd also said he'd have my heads for about 3 to 4 weeks, and I'm hoping to have my car done by then. I would love to send my heads out, but right now I don't have the time or extra funds to do so. Any other ideas?

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

If all you want is a cam then the LT4 hotcam kit is great for budget builds. Problem is you wont get very close to your goal without some good ported heads too. In that case Id have to agree the LE setups will save you some pennies over other routes and you should get a lot closer to meeting your goals.

That sums it up. I had the hotcam kit on stock heads and stock conveter but had a tune from madwolf. It ran 13.6x on motor and 12.32 @ 116 on the 100 shot on regular 245/50/16 street tires. Nitrous works great with a stock converter. Normally people will run a little tighter converter on nitous cars.

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

I did the hot cam kit on my 97. Car went 12.9 with HOT CAM kit, massaged TB with airfoil, Moroso CAI, Borla catback, and a 3200 stall Yank converter. On juice the car took me to a 11.7. Not a bad set up for stock manifolds and cats at 110k miles.

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

My hotcammed car with stock heads, LT's, 3.73 gears, and 2800 stall with a decent tune....and of course my ET drags I pulled a 12.95 with a missfire. If you dont' want to spend alotta cash and want some good gains on the strip, and still have the car drivable. The hotcam is a good buy! By the way...GTX..is that the grand prix or the regal. And what year?

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

You can't really go wrong with a hotcam in a stock motor. Its complimented nicely by a set of heads but still works good on stock heads. It also makes plenty of torque for street driving.

My car went 12.9 with a stock engine and hotcam/ 3.23's
It went at 12.50 with the same plus a 2800 stall.

Re: Lt4 hot cam kit?

The GTX is the grand Prix. It started its life as a GTP, but now after a few parts she has run a best of 12.336 and its a daily driver assuming the weather is nice. Her boyfriend just raced it at Watkins Glenn amd said he passed a Z06 on the hill going around the track. Its a nasty car . Well I think what I'll do is get the hot cam kit, and a 2800-3000 stall converter, 3.73 gears, a wet nitrous kit, and mail order tune. That should get me moving. Has anyone tried the nitrous express kit with the throttle body plate? Its on clearance at summit right now for $450.
