Exclamation LT1 / ZZ4 forged crank users - Inside please! I have a few ?'s ...

I am putting a budget 355 together and have just about all forged internals right now minus a crankshaft. At the moment I just have the stock crank.. I would rather spend a few more bucks knowing i have some added insurance... something that will take abuse.. I was told by a few people that a cheap alternative to the stock crank would be the stock ZZ4 crank that it is forged ( not 4340 , but is still strong.)

Just trying to gather who has done it and what kind of numbers it has taken... I have been looking for the past week or so on here and ebay and have not found one, most of them sell between 200-250 each from what I saw previously.. I have to get the engine balanced anyways so i figure spend the extra few bucks..

oh btw the cranks part number is 12556307 and is over 600 bucks on gmpartsdirect.com.. not looking to spend that much LOL ..

any help is greatly appreciated guys, i owe you one

thanks
Paul

I thought about using that crank for a long time before I decided to go with a stroker.
I would just get a Eagle 4340 forged crank for $500. It will be better than the GM crank. I've seen that GM crank for $500
I think you can get a Scat 9000 crank which should be a lot better than your stock crank for about $250 on Ebay maybe less

I spin mine to 6800 all the damn time with a 4 bolt conversion. On the dyno I have put down 392 at the wheels at 6600 rpms for almost 8 hours of dyno time. I got mine for 100 bucks from a friend who bought a ZZ4 and rebuilt it new out of the crate. I like them, and think they are a great way to save a few bucks. Hopefully mine will see a little squeeze before the end of the year.

If you're building a street car that will see the track once in a while, shifting at something less than 7,000rpm... save your money and spend it on the cylinder heads.
The cast crank, properly balanced and blueprinted, will be fine.

Guys are running stock rotating assemblies to 6800 and beyond, the stock crank is mighty tough. If spending the money on a crank I would go stroker.

Well this would be a more then likely more of a street car, will go to the track every now and then. I don't want to do a stroker motor just yet, I'm still in the learning process of engines and don't want the first engine I do , to be something high high dollar. I have forged pistons and rods already, I already have to balance the setup, I plan on running some juice on the car in the future so I thought a few extra dollars would be better insurance. I just don't know what the stock cranks limits are that is all.. I doubt I would have a higher shift point then around 6k maybe 6200 at most.. All depends on where my powerband ends up on the stock heads flow that I'm getting ported. This engine is not a whole lot of money, but I want the bottom end to be strong enough to take some abuse, but I won't spend 500 dollars on a stock sized crankshaft, If i were to spend that much it would be definintely going more stroke. I just saw the prices for the ZZ4 crank and thought it would be tough enough for my setup and perfect on my wallet. I was told by a local shop to stay away from scat.. that they aren't as strong as the stock crank.

Dreamer- Have you ever ran forced induction on your car? 390 rwhp I would assume would be on all motor correct? I just want to see if this crank would be strong enough to take 500-525 rwhp / tq numbers on the dyno and track.
I'm not positive yet if I will leave it two bolt or make it 4 bolt splayed or not yet.. It all depends on the machine work.. I only have so much $ to work with right now, thats the problem..

No I have never run forced induction, I am all NA right now. At least until the squeeze is put on it later this year. But according to what I have seen ZZ4 motors do before, I wouldnt worry about 500 horse at all

$515:

I'm selling one right now that's ground to 3.50" stroke, but for way less than $515.

Mike

I run a stock crank with 2 bolt mains with good rods/pistons. Everything has held up great for 3 years of racing and spinning to 7000. Most made on motor was 440/408. I just put a small hit (75) shot on it for fun and made 502/535. Put good rod bolts and main studs and you should be fine as long as you keep the juice in control.

Mike...contact me about your crank.

ENgineermike- I'm not too smart on the stroke setups, but how did you get it to go from 3.48 to 3.50 ? Increase rod length?? I'm not sure.. PM me the info and price..

95bird- wow i wasn't sure if the stock crank would handle 500rwhp... If i can't find a new crank cheap then I'll be using my stock one. Yeah the rods I bought are eagle forged 5.7" w/ arp bolts. I haven't bought the mains yet that will be on the jegs order more then likely.. Ugh can't wait to see that bill.. I won't be spraying that much, I'm looking for numbers like you put down. But my n/a numbers won't be as high as yours, and I'll be shifting MUCH lower..

Check this out. With this crank

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

in a 3.8 in stroke you can get some interesting possibilities.

9.025 in. deck height/ 5.7 in. rod/1.425 in. compression height piston = 0 deck
9.025 in. deck height/5.85 in. rod/1.275 in. compression height piston= 0 deck
9.010 in. deck height/ 5.7 in.rod/ 1.410 in. compression height piston= 0 deck
9.010 in deck height/5.85 in. rod 1.260 in. compression height piston= 0 deck

Raul Negrette posted this over on the advanced forum....

QUOTE=smblkracer]I have never posted on this site before and just became aware of it by a customer of ours. As for GM's tech site, they are sadly mistaken. All GM part #12489436 were manufactured by Cola Crankshaft using Cola forgings, made by Louisville Forge & Gear. This crank could handle more than 1500HP at well over 10,000RPM. This cranks has to be the strongest crankshaft ever sold by GMPD. Cola has in stock for the late model engine cranks from 3.480 to 4.000 in various styles.

I think this may be the steal of the century....

Nice wheely. I'm an Exmark dealer in SE Virginia. Good luck with your engine build. I used a Scat 4340 in my stroker.
