lt1 year questions...

well i got my friends LT1 that we are going to put in his 88 camaro sitting in my garage right now... what i was wondering is what year the engine is...

the numbers that i have found on it so far, (i havent ripped it apart are)

on the back of the engine... GM 57LG
SGI

and on the passenger side motor mount these numbers are there: 10188334 LT1 RH

any ideas?

here are a couple pics of the engine...

Engine 1

Engine 2

and i finally have a question...

what the hell is this (were studs are sticking out)?!

thanks for any help

Check the timing chain cover vs. the pics in this article:

REBUILDING THE LT1

The hole on the back of the intake, with the two studs is the connection for a tube from #8 exhaust runner, that supplies exhaust for the EGR system.

This will tell you the vintage of the engine.

Those studs by the EGR is where the EGR exhaust tube hooks up.

does the opti spark have a vent tube? If so it's a 95-97... if not a 92-94.

thanks for the help, but right now i cant really see exactly those numbers engraved by the oil filter, they look like they have been more or less scratched in...

and that EGR exhaust runner is there away to block it off? see the deal is that its going into my friends 88 camaro, and we have to use his factory manifolds for now... (hofully they bolt up)

is there any other problems that we are going to have along the way? hes getting a computer and wiring harness for the car, so hopfully it will just bolt in and hook up...

is there any tricks to getting the distributor and water pumps off that i should know about before i rip them off?

i hope this isnt as hard as im afraid its going to be..

*oh yeah i forgot to say that it has alunium heads.. doesnt that mean its a 95-97?

thanks for the help...

The vin derivative is applied in a dot matrix fashion, so the numbers look a little funny.

This site may help with some of your removal and install questions.

It is the common name used for the front mounted distributor on the LT1 engine. It uses an optical pickup for timing references.
