lt1 waterpump

ok, my waterpump started leaking on me sometime this weekend, and was just wandering how much of a pain it is to change, that way i know what i'm looking at. the car is my only driveable car right now so i have to try and get it done in one evening in order to make it to work the next day.

Re: lt1 waterpump

It can all be done easily in a couple of hours. Remove the intake elbow, drain the radiator, remove the lines, remove the AIR pump, and then remove the six bolts that hold the water pump on, they are all 9/16". The one behind the p/s pulley can be tricky, I can reach it OK with a standard long 9/16" socket, but sometimes a swivel can come in handy there.

Also make sure that the pump drive collar and o-rings make it back on correctly. You don't want to have to do the job twice.

Re: lt1 waterpump

well i got it changed out last night, but when it was all back together i checked for leaks and stuff, and to my suprise the damn water pump (new one) had a crack in it on the underside and was leaking just as bad as the old one, so thats got me really pissed off since i have to do it all over again this afternoon. only one good thing about it this time, i know what all has to come off to get to the water pump now, so it should be a lil quick today.

Are you sure it's the pump leaking and not a hose allowing water to drip off the bottom of the pump? I ask because I had a similar experience, where it ended up being a hose up top leaking water down the waterpump housing.

I've also had new pumps leak due to insufficient coating of RTV on the bolts.

Thomas.
