more abuse

lt1 maybe an older engine a little weaker but has a lot of potential. i have every bolt except headers no heads and cam and dynoed 292p 324 pounds of torque. also the ls1s have trmec trannys which i heard they go out vs the borgwarner trannys we have. so if you are looking to pound on the engine more lt1.

Tremec designed the original T56, now BorgWarner makes it, its the same trannsmission minus the input shaft and bolt pattern on the bellhousing.

The 6 speed trannies are different in an LS1 than an LT1 or so I've been told. The best 6 speeds are out of the 93-96's I believe, I think 97 even though its a LT1 has the 6 speed that was produced by tremec which is the same one in the LS1's and people tend to have more problems as far as longevity goes with the LS1 trannies. Just something to think about and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong or if I stated something incorrectly

As Larnach said...the transmissions are EXACTLY the same in all years from 94-2002 with the exception of the mounting pattern (nothing to do with anything but bolting it up to the engine). Some (or all...cant remember) of the 93 cars however had the same transmissions, but with slightly different gearing.

I think there's a pretty fair consensus on this. If you plan on leaving it stock or just simple mods, get the LS1 if you can afford it. It's faster. If you plan on more serious mods, you have to really be careful. The LS1 is lighter and has more potential due to a superior cylinder head design. That said, it will be more expensive to build up a super hi-po LS1. If I were starting a new F-body project I would either get on older 4th gen and use a gen I small block or go LS1, even though I love my LT1. But if I just wanted a fun, inexpensive high performance car, a '95 LT1 can't be beat.
