Question LT1 Tune Up

My 97 Z28 is in need of a tune up. Anyone have any tips/tricks/pictures on how to get to all of the plugs and wires? I've heard that the best way to get to them is to take the y-pipe off. Thanks.

just reach ur damn hand in there none of them took me more then 15 minutes once i figured the best way to do it...

The one closest to the alternator what i did, i put the socket on the spark and i got a rench 3/4 inch i think it was and u can crank it like that, the ratchet doesnt fit very well,
The one closest to the driver, i got from above, w/ 2 different ratches a smaller one to get it in, and a larger one to get it all the way cause the larger one would rotate to much to get it started...

all the others are easy, accually i didnt finnish the one nearest to the passenger i didnt wanna break whatever my hand was rubbing up against, and it didnt need new sparks anyway... just put ur hand in there it'll probably take u about 3 hours ur first time and maybe an hour and a half the second time

Drivers side is easy as hell.

The passenger side took me a good 5 hours, and a whole lot of scrapes and bruises. Just take your time and use a rubber hose to unscrew/screw the spark plugs back in. You will be better off getting them from above, but i dont even think you could even reach them from underneath.

Also the wires for the passenger side will be a pain in the *** as well. Cut the old ones off and try and feed one at a time through the alternator area. I removed the wire holder, but i believe you could get through it if you just cut the old ones off.

tune up

i agree drivers side is easy pass. side you have to brake your arm in a couple places. i found the easy way is to use spark plug socket and gear drive wrench can do it from above use rubber tub to put in and take out takes me about one hour total as far as routing wires i would run over the valve covers with made for you looms

i think for me the hardest one to get to was the one near the steering column, that one took me probably 7+ hours to get in and out twice... the rest were easy compared to that...

Everyone says changing the plugs is hard..but it is pretty easy if your relaxed and take your time.

Easy way to do it is get the two rear plugs on the Drivers side from the bottom, I think you can get to the 2nd plug from the front from the bottom not too sure if I did it that way. But the Front Driverside plug you can get out from the top.

On the passengerside you should be able to get them all from the top....Of course remove your altinator first. The 2 in the rear are easy. Simple solution is that the Exhaust Gas Tube is in the way. You can bend it back some so you can stick your arm in to get to the other plugs in the rear. The 2 front plugs on the passengerside were the hardest I think. If you remove the altenator Bracketry (black brakets) You can get your hand down in there better. Took me 2 days to do the swap...(like to take my time) but you can knock it out in 5hours or so if your patient. Just make sure you buy and extra set of plugs just in case...some antisieze and...Swivels...will be your best friend.

BTW...the last spark plug on the Passengerside is supposed to be the hardest to get to...But if you bend back the Exhaust tube a bit you'll see how easy it is to get to.

Changing the wires takes about another hundred hours!

When I first did mine I brought Taylor 8mm's spent 2 days to get them on...Car kept missfireing. Some of the Taylorwires were cut short and weren't catching on the plugs...sent them back and spent another...2days installing the old..new Spark wires.

Getting the wires in is difficult on the passengers side. driverside is easy. No problem.....Passengerside hard to get to the two rear plugs. A cool way to do it is just gently lay the wire lips on the sparkplug so that it's on there....then use a long stick to push it into place...I used a cut up plastic coat hanger.

hope that helps...
