LT1 timing set recommendations/tips for install?
LT1 timing set recommendations/tips for install?
Hello all,
I really regret not doing the timing chain when I replaced the Opti last summer on my early '94 car, because the car is at 135k and I know the last 15k miles or so were HARD miles. Lots of SCCA Solo events.
Can you all recommend a timing set to me for a basically stock car? Has a tune, full exhaust, CAI, but stock 6sp car otherwise.
Also, any links to a good write up or how-to would be much appreciated.
Sucks thinking about tearing it all back apart but if I start racing it again this summer I'd really like the peace of mind knowing the timing set is fresh. I would like to put a cam in, I'll be deep enough at that point, but I'm assuming the associated parts like rockers/lifters/springs would be recommended for replacement as well and I can't really justify that extra $500 expense.
Thanks!

Chevrolet Performance 12370835 Chevrolet Performance LT1/LT4 Timing Chain Set - Free Shipping on All Orders @ JEGS The timing gear has more mass to help eliminate vibration and it has a roller versus stamped chain.
You need a special puller to get the water pump shaft off and a way to press on/off the new water pump drive gear on the shaft. Also put the water pump shaft seal on after the timing cover is back on and make sure the two seals are not overlapping (one goes in, one goes out). Search for water pump seal on here and you will find a bunch of posts with pictures

You did mention that, just did not register in my brain. You can convert to an electric water pump and that opens up more options as you don't need the drive.
Re: LT1 timing set recommendations/tips for install?
If you are running a non-vented opti, stock type sets are the only thing you can use (even if you convert to an electric water pump). You still must have the stock type cam gear with the splines to drive the opti.

revival!
I'm running non vented OEM opti. I have converted to electric water pump so the OEM water pump housing has been modified to suit.

You still need a timing set with a cam sprocket with the splines for the non-vented Opti drive. If the stocker has lasted you 135K with no problems, Shoebox's solution would appear to be the best.
Re: LT1 timing set recommendations/tips for install?
Thanks but still leaves me curious about brand/supplier choice. Stock type can be made in china crap or otherwise superior quality, IDK which brand to go with? Cloyes?
