LT1 Swap into a thirdgen + CC503 - Tin can thunk

Video will be available here:

You can see a slight thunk/thunk/thunk/thunk as if someone is taking a spoon against a tin can. I took off my accessory belt and made sure it was coming from the engine.

I bought this motor from a salvage yard, and it had 70k on it. Sent me a video of it running, and everything is legit, but I didn't put new plugs in it since I got it. To me it sounds like a dead hole or something.

Put new springs in for the CC503 swap, and basically replaced all the gaskets. Kinda weird though.

:-\
----------------

Took a mechanics stethoscope and I could hear it loudest at the oil pan, but I don't know if it's really hitting the pan.

Here's a new video today before I drained the oil/took off filter.

Hard to see the dipstick. Is there any debris on it?

Sounds to me like Rod knock, but could be the flex plate as well. Very difficult to judge from the video.

Sure sounds like a rod knock mine was making the same noise about 2 months ago thats what it was . Drain the oil if its shinny like theres metal in it then you found your problem .

I'd bet my rep. on it being a rod knock. Sorry!!

Alright...damn. Well thanks guys. Looks like the motor is coming out anyhow. Not sure why it ran ok at the junkyard (They have a video), yet after the cam swap it threw a rod bearing. Not sure how long it had that noise, as I couldn't hear it before the exhaust was put on.

To top it off, the t56 I bought with 50k on it grinds into 4th, and into 4th from 5th. What a nightmare project this has turned into.

The t56 isnt hard to rebuild ,4th and 5th you can do without taking the entire tranny apart . sucks about the bearing find another good bottom end lt1 and just swap over your back in business .

Thanks about being optimistic about this lol. Weird thing is, I never seen shavings in the oil. I pulled some plugs and however did notice a very small bridge forming between the electrode and ground strap. I wonder if such a thing could cause a motor to knock like this? :O

Do you mean a carbon bridge? Is it running extremely rich? That might explain the knock due to the oil being thinned out by fuel.

Yeah, they were slightly bridged, like they had a very small nub on the ground strap.

Here's an update, I pulled the trans and engine out today, and pulled the pan here's what I found or...didn't find.

Connecting rod, green marking paint maybe? Is that normal from the factory? I bought the motor used with 70k and afaik it's stock.

Slight scrape on the oil pan 4" back from front seal.

The mark

4" back is shown here.

The journals look good around the edges of the crank, so I'm wondering what you guys think. Ever happen to someone before? Please note the pan was damaged when I received it....and I hammered it out, but that was more towards the rear, I never touched the front as it didn't look damaged at the time.

I will pull the caps/bearings sometime tomorrow just to verify they are alright. Been a while since I took a motor apart for inspection, anyone have a guide to what normal bearing wear should look like?

Thanks

Looks to me that the pan is hitting the rod, put it back on, rotate by hand and check. If it is, beat the pan until it clears.

Weird how it would do that from a stock bottom end. Didn't appear to be any damage from the underside of that area either. Wonder if anyone else had an issue like this with stock bottom end / pan.

Not sure, a lot of those places just yank and either stick them on a tire, or a hand made wood cradle. Maybe they dropped it down hard or someone wedged something in between the oil pan and crossmember to lift the motor for motor mounts, headers etc.... hard to say with yard finds.

Here's an update guys - I think I found the noise....I hope.

After I pounded it out, everything looked fine with another test using 1/8" glob of vaseline on the pan. I didn't bother checking bearings, as my reliable torque wrench broke and I don't feel any play in the rods or see any damage. The engine is almost fully back into the car, ready to start up again, will post once I fire it up again!
