LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
Looking to get one or the other-love the body of the LT1, love the motor of the LS1. 96-97 SS's came with 305 hp right? Thats comparable with the numbers that the 98+ correct? Also, the ram air hood was functional on 96-97 wasn't it, while post 98 it was closed off right? Which would you buy, why?
Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
the 96-97 LT1 came standard at 305hp or 315 with the optional 2OTL exhaust. The LS1 is still more powerful though, and the scoop on both models is still functional. Just get which ever car you feel you'd enjoy driving more. You can always mod, so power can be made from either motor.

Although the LT1 (stock) are not likly to dyno above 300hp. on the other hand the ls1 will
Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
To put it this way my 2000 SS with the LS1 intake still (2001+ had a LS6 intake) a ported throttle body and MAF along with a lid goes 110mph in the 1/4. That's with 3600lbs to carry... no "stock" LT1 I know of with that weight can do that.
That works out to about 360hp at the flywheel
There is no comparison.

Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
lt1's are cheaper to mod the parts may be harder to find for the older engine, but i have found that there is a large difference in price for the same quality parts, espeacilly (sp?) internal engine components
Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
even though i have an lt1, i wish i could say that i would take the lt1 ss.
in all honesty, i would definitely take the ls1 (although theres no way in hell i'd trade in my current lt1 for one though
. bret and lloyd already helped me make that one too much fun!)

Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
weren't the 96-97 SS's sent to SLP for modification, and limited produced, while 98+ SS came outa the factory in droves? The idea of rarity appeals more to me then starting out with 30 extra hp. Thats where the whine of a s-charger would come in...decisions decisions.
Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
I like my '96 Z28, but If we are talking even money, I'd go with the LS1. Even though they can both be modded, the potential for the LS1 is out of this world. With 400hp (pseudo)GTOs coming out........I'd go with the LS1.
Re: LT1 SS vs LS1 SS
The 1996-1997 is so much better looking than 1998-2002 Camaros, it is a shame.
I see at least two 1998+ SS's every day. I might see a 1996 (2400 made) or a 1997 (2800 made) a few times a year....maybe.
I find it distressing to look at them, with headlights (eyeballs) that look like Rodney Dangerfield is smiling through a Bass-Fish mouth.
Even the 1996 has a more refined spoiler, without the support uprights.
Yes, the LS1 is a powerful engine, by about 30-40HP, but any local dragstrip will have plenty of competitors of both stripes pounding each other with successes from each camp.
The Camaro is no longer made. The LS1s are newer, probably fewer miles and probably in better shape overall. Both are dropping in value daily!!
Get what you want and be happy.
