LT1 in a Second Gen

OK, I did a search hoping to get some info on a LT1 engine and A4 tranny swap into a second gen Camaro. Nothing came up. Has anybody done this, or know where I can get info? I could only find one write-up, and it talked mainly about how to get the engine to fit in the bay.

I'm pulling a tired old 229 with 169K miles out of my 1980 Camaro and am installing a LT1 and A4 out of a '97 Camaro with 60K miles on it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. If there isn't a good write-up out there now, I guess there will be one when I get through with mine.

have you checked on nastyz28.com? or you could also check thirdgen.org , in the engine swap section, lots of writeups of dropping said combo in 3rd gens, so i suppose you could get quite a few "ideas" through that as well hth

The motor should bolt into a second gen. The biggest problem will be the accessories, IMO. I would invest in a march belt system if I were going to attempt it. Also, you'll need a new fuel system, electric fans, the wiring harness from a donor car, a new speedometer. It's a long list, but the end result should be worth it, especially if you put in a nice heads/cam package before you set it in the car.

like stated, straight forward, but long list. the motor will bolt in, the tranny will to, may need a custom tranny mount, custom drive shaft, fuel system, the colling can be used from a donor car, as the pcm and harness, accesories being the big pain. i posted this in the second gen section a few years ago as i have a 79 as well, there was a few websites i was directed to.

Thanks guys.

93formula, you posted a question in the second gen section of what site, nastyz28.com?

From the donor car, I am getting the motor, tranny, computer, harness, A/C components and controls, instrument cluster, radiator, complete exaust system, and pretty much everything I think I can use. Whatever I can't use I'll resell. Thanks again.

i did the same swap into a 69 camaro. i used the 92-93 paineless wiring harness.which made it speed density.the harness i think is $365 nad then you just need to get a 93 computer. it was really easy from install to running i had 3 day in it.

i posted in this site. i had a web page book marked but i lost it when i formatted my computer. it had several steps documented and the guy installed a t56 in th350 car.

if you have everything it should make it real easy, but are you plannign on swapping the interior as well? i thought of this too , its very time consuming.

the exhuast sytem is useless, just use sb chevy headers for the year of car, it will bolt up.

id say drop the ac unless you want a huge hassle on your hands. not sure but if you keep the ac compressor you may have to notch the frame, a simple way would be to use the ac delete pulley or the new accesories bracket thats out that relocates the alternator.

the biggest hassle will probably be the fuel system, which shouldnt be too hard.

good luck

You can keep your AC, but I'd look into March Performance's pulley setup for the LT1. It should fit under a stock hood, but I'm not 100% on that.

Also, you will need to modify your transmission cross member to mount farther back since the 4L60E tranny is a little bit longer than the TH350. You will also need to have your driveshaft shortened.

Thanks all. I'm in Georgia, so no A/C is a lousy option. I'm looking into the same pulley system that is on the Vette, where the compressor is mounted high on the other side.
