lt1 recall ????????
lt1 recall ????????
im looking for a block for rebuilding. the only local guy i can find has 20 complete motors cheap, but he says gm pulled them for a recall. he said they were pulled for a bearing prob but they dont have spun bearings. i am going there tommorow to possibly buy a block and was wondering if anybody has more info on weather or not these are rebuildable. if you know anything about this let me know asap because i might buy one tommorow thanks
I have heard of this before. It wasn't bearing issues though in the case I am thinking of.
When a colleague of mine was being sponsored by GM to race the LT1 f-bodies, GM provided him with blocks. They weren't new, however.
When somebody who bought an LT1 f-body had ANY sort of internal engine trouble, the dealer yanked the motors and put in new ones from GM. These yanked motors, were kept and sold, either by the dealer or GM in certain cases.
The dealer ended up keeping the old motor in most cases, and selling it for a small profit.
However, this means you DO NOT know what is wrong with the motor, and they can be viewed as only "considerable" bare-blocks, that need checking and most likely a rebuild. You could guess that the heads would be fine, if there was no catastrophic failure.
GM stopped sponsoring my colleage when the LS1 came out, and these engines are sitting around in many places.
Consider them good for bare blocks and heads only.

Most likely these are pulled engines for the Piston Slap... many people griped to their dealerships about it enough they were often pulled with nothing really wrong with them.
I know of two people that bought these engines and put them in Datusun 280Z's without doing any rebuilding and they have been perfect.

well the vertic is in i ended up buying a complete long block for 1100$ canadian. he said the motors were all pulled at about 40k for bearing probs, and he would exchange it for any of the other 9 if it had spun mains. i took it home and tore it apart the crank bearings looked brand new and the rod bearings were wore pretty bad but with no gouges or srapes so i think a batch must of got defective rod bearings. the whole motor was exceptionaly clean with no sludge any were. i think if i wanted i could through new rings and bearing in and have a good little engine.... but what fun would that be. stroker time
