LT1 Rebuild On a Budget Suggestion

I have a 94 Z28 M6 that has been sitting in my parents garage for two years now; I drove it back and forth to college and put a ton of miles on it (160,000 mi). When I put it away, the car was running really rich and wasn't reliable, and currently it will not stay running at all. Anyway, I am toying with the idea of doing a complete rebuild or just the top; I know with that many miles I should do a complete rebuild. I have about $2500 to play with, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

For 2500 bucks, you would be hard pressed to get a good rebuild. That would be enough to freshen up the top end and put in some aftermarket stuff. I would investigate the problem further though, the engine dying out may not be nothing seriously wrong with the motor, it could just be something ignition or fuel related.

I agree. Check the fuel system and everything else before tearing into the motor.

I did my full rebuild for less that that, but I had help putting it back together myself, so I only paid labor to the machine shop for the block and rotating assembly prep.

Dude, if funds are tight find the problem and address it. Could be fouled plugs, bad plug wires, clogged catalytic or fuel pump or some other simple thing.

How do you know it is excessfully rich, LT1's new off the showroom floor ran a bit richer than they really should have.

I don't know if your motor needs rebuilding or not. But if you can the R+R yourself, a basic rebuild should be possible for $2,500. You could buy a rebuilt longblock from a reputable rebuilder for less than $2K and have your heads rebuilt for the $500 you hav left.
