I've had the intake manifold leak, and a water pump go, and a fuel pump go. None of these are internal engine related, and the engine has run like a champ. Granted I have low miles(56,000) on my '97.

What on earth caused your fuel pump to go out? As long as the filter is changed on a regular basis and you get decent gas you shouldn't have to put on a pump for 150k miles at least.

Good question. It happened early in the vehicle life, so I'm assuming it was just bad quality control. I didn't really argue, since it was under warranty. It was a pain when the car wouldn't start though.

About 63K miles on mine, had to replace the waterpump. When a stock part goes, a nicer, more beneficial aftermarket part takes its place (got an electric waterpump)

Lt1s have been ease to get very VERY high miles on, man some of the ex-cop cars I've seen turned cabbies are ridiculous. Do your regualr maintenance.

I'm an average Joe like you who has collected tools as he needed them as jobs presented themselves. After working on my LT1 it makes working on ANY other car I've come across a cake walk.

Yeah that would definately suck...my mechanic and I are pretty good friends he helps me with my cars a lot and he said he's seen LT1 cars (Impalas, Vettes, F bods) with 250+k miles on the factory fuel pumps simply because they're taken care of properly and mostly fuel filter changes and injection system being cleaned fairly often...that sucks you just got bit by the quality bug....

186K on my 96 slowmaro. Blown one tranny and a starter with the battery. Still runs strong on it 220 miles per day drive.

Quality is a matter of degrees. If you are asking if the Lt1 is "high" on the scale, I believe you answered your own question.

Where it ranks depends on what you are comparing it to as far as cost, performance, etc.

If you are comparing it with an Italian Stallion or such ilk, I'd say you get a lot for your money with an Lt1 as far as performance and cost to maintain is concerned.JMHO

111,500 on the clock here. I replaced the MAP sensor, 02's, new rear end(got a new pinion seal and they over tightened it and caused the rear to go out...they paid for the new one) and the heater coil, that's about it. I still have the original opti, etc. New opti, etc. is going in with the new engine. But overall, I've been pleased with the LT1. I could have bought a new car, but opted to just redo the whole thing(engine, tranny, suspension). I don't know what it is about the LT1, but I just love it!! I think it is great that so many people are into the LT1 instead of opting for the LS1.

The one thing I really wanted to do to my 96 Z was replace the front/rear mains, pan gasket, and oil pressure sending unit seal! That way they didn't dirty the underside!

Thats the only complaint I had about my car

125K miles on mine

blown one tranny, because the person who did the tranny service did not fill up the tranny fluid

a starter went out in the middle of a parking lot at 11 PM at night, and i was with my GF.

water pump is leaking, piece of cake to replace and only $50 from autozone

opti still fine

other than that, everything else go well.....

now it has full bolt on, stage II tranny, and 75 wet NX shot....nice and strong engine

Bought mine new 9 years ago as of 9-1. Currently have 183,000 miles on it. Only non routine maintenance items I've had to replace have been 2 water pumps, 2 optis, and a intake bellow.
Even with those miles, the car still runs strong, doesnt use oil and doesnt smoke. It has been my daily driver the whole time.
I don't think I have much to complain about.

Besides that everything is complicated these days it seems. I'm so used to tinkering with mine that I find it to be someone easy to work on, as opposed to others.

I'd hang on to yours, its just getting broke in.

True, I did trash a set of stock pistons, but GM never said they were intended for 10psi of boost. Except the Opti, the mechanical and electrical components in an LT1 are excellent. As with most GM vehicles, some of the trim and ancillary systems could be better. But what do you expect in a car that sold new in the low $20K range, looks good, handles well, runs low 14's in the 1/4 mile and over 150mph top speed?

Great car.

He asked if the LT1 was a good product. Not a camaro

What would you know about LT1s? Your motor has as much in common with an LT1 as I do with a spark plug

Scratch 327 off that block and no one would know...

On my Trans-am. I put 170,000 miles on the motor and was spraying 150 HP of Nitrous. I was running 11.80's in the qtr and the motor was stock and original. She would still be running today of I didnt ad a 8lbs vortech. She blew a head gasket. LT1 motors are a very good motor as long as they are well maintained. I have 5 f-bodys in my Family and they all have the LT1. All of them run great and the only problems I have really encountered with any of them is the Damn OPTI and water pump. I am currently switching 2 of my cars over to the LTCC conversion. Hopefully this will stop any OPTI problems I have had in the past.

The motor it self is great, just a lot of the crap around it sucks. I have talked to a head tech at very big race shops a couple years ago and he remember when LT1s were brand new leaking oil off the intake seal. Cars that were just comming off the dealer lot with zero miles leaking oil like your car did. My cars 10 years old and seen 57K daily driven miles, the car spent the first 5 years in hawaii so not to many miles but still daily driven.

Opti 55K Miles, due to coolant line leak causing the water pump to dump coolant, whotf thought of this feature. Any case plusg and wires were still good but replaced with MSD and NGKs.

Starter, Not much to say, little bit bad timming but it lasted 10 years.

Rotors, 41K miles, that was just uncalled for.

LT1's

My engine of choice, I prefer it over the others.

'95Z28: 3rd optispark, 3rd clutch, 3rd set of u-joints, second pinion seal, rear overhaul, 2nd set of bfg drags, snapped both end links off the rear sway bar, replaced w/poly and 1LE rear sway, factory replaced intake gasket @ 52,000 miles, new O2 sensors, no leaks now. Tranny shifts great, (M6) Pretty much every bolt-on you can get, now only has 70,000 miles.

'94Trans Am: Bought last year w/115,000 miles on it, and since that time, driver's window rivet broke, still needs assistance to raise properly, pass side window switch, driver's door lock assembly (don't lock), fuel pump a couple month back (OMFG!), bad coil, replaced alternator, and leaks at both the front and rear of engine. Starter's soaks, gotta assume it's the intake gasket and/or rear seal. Runs good though, and it has that shift perform button, and that works great still...

Sounds like a lot, but really, I do drive the pee out of the '94, driven by both me and my wife, everyday, working opposite shifts, 100+ miles per day. The '95 I only drive here and there, and has only been in the rain 4 or 5 times since I owned it (1998).

Small prices to pay for performance and the feel of a fuelie V8.
