Lt1 overheats - Burns under hood insulation

UPDATE - PICS BELOW!

Ever since I got my car the spot under the hood where the alternator is, all the insulation was burned off from under the hood in like a 4 x 1 inch strip and melted onto the alternator housing...How badly overheated was it? Anyone ever seen this before?

Its only got 40k on it too, and runs like a top raced it a few times but the head gasket leaks on the outside of the head its wiierd. I'm replacing it in the summer along w/ a full tuneup and longtubes. I already had to rebuild the trans, so its been raced for the most of its life.

I had an ac compressor burn up and made a similar mark on the insulation. It actually caught fire and burnt that part so it would take some intense heat to cause that. It didn't burn through to the hood since it was caught early but did its job.

Is it possible you have a faulty AIR check valve on the passenger side, and the hose right behind the alternator is melted and blowing hot exhaust gas on the alternator and insulation?

I don't think you could melt that hood blanket without scorching the paint, as I believe it's fiberglass. Could you be seeing oil or melted plastic that was flung up there instead? Maybe a badly overheated alternator melted the plastic fan and spit it out.

Pics please.

The insulation is definitly melted thats for sure. The paint is fine as far as I can tell. When I got the car I was picking pieces of the insulation out from around the alternator bracket. Alternator looks stock, my AC is shot so maby that could have something to do w/ it I dont know. I'll get picks up today after work.

well if the clutch to the ac is shot, it can not disengage. When the bearings lock up in the compressor that can cause a fire. Seen that before on a few vehicles. (not LT1 specific)

Don't ask me there are a lot of wierd things surrounding my car that the previous owner did. Such as the clutch was replaced under 30k, He used the center console inside as an ashtray. The guy was clearly an idiot. I don't know this for sure as I never meet him, I got it from a dealer.

Crap I didnt have time to get pics up yesterday, hopefully today.

As Injuneer said, did you check the AIR valves and rubber hoses to be sure that they are operational?

Are all of the plastic clips in place that hold the fiberglass insulation under the hood? It is possible that the insulation was sagging down if the clips were not holding it up, and perhaps it was resting on the alternator (or whatever in that area) for a while.

Here we go some pics!

Noticed the PW pulley is flaking for some reason and the alt has that white **** on the fan blade. No idea what that is. The air system was always messed up (threw and error) before I just got it tuned out so I could pass emissions. Made more sense then fixing it since I have no cats. Keep in mind the car had 30k on it when I got it and all this already happened.
