LT1 to LS1 Swap Out

I have been researching the forums for some straight answers for the past couple of days but I can't find any, so I am going to post this question once again.

I have already decided for different reasons to swap my LT1 4L60(it's a '93) to a LS1 with a T56.

If I get an LS1 with computer and accessories(i.e. water pump, alternator, ect.) along with the T-56 already attached with all peadles and such what will I need to also get to make it fit properly into the compartment? I have been hearing talks about getting a a different K-Member and having the AC lines re-run, is there anything else that I would need?

I have also heard that it can't clear the hood, is that just the air-box or is that also the engine itself?

Thanks, and sorry to keep posting threads like this but I can't get any of the answers I am looking for.

search harder Out of the million times this has been asked, there has to be a straight answer somewhere, but just in case, here's one:

It aint worth it, time or money, too much involved for too little reward, but so many people get hung up on it because they just want to say they have an LS1, and for NO OTHER REASON. if there were interested in power they'd save themselves some time and money and hassle and rebuild their LT1 and it'd outrun a stock or bolt on LS1 handily.

Oh wait, you had other questions.. oh well

i am interested as well, but i actuall have to get a new engine so it may as well be a ls1. someone told me that id need to do the 98+ upgrade on the body, or get a cowl hood, but i dont think so with a custom air intake(not intake manifold) designed from the lt1. as for the custom k-member, i think im going to replace it any way, may as well its only 350 bucks.

as far as i know, and i have no experience with this yet, is the ls1 and all its accessories will fit into the lt1's bay with no problems. the ac lines will need to be rerun, and a slave/master cyl will be needed if you go from auto to stick.

thats about all i know that needs to be changed.

later

Thanks Brian. If anyone else has any information, please feel free to leave it.

To the other guys, thank you for taking the time to leave me your opinions but for certain reasons I have just decided I want to do this, I know the LT1 is a stronger engine and can be modded to be faster than the LS1 stock but I have my reasons for wanting this LS1 and T56. Thanks though.

you will need a different center console for the manual, the actual putting in the tranny shouldnt be that hard, you *should* already have a hole with a plug for the clutch. the motor mounts are different, but if you are upgrading to a tyubular k-member or something then that shouldn't matter.
The air box will not clear the stock hood, the engine itself should. So if you get something custom, it will fit underneath the hood as far as I know.

BUT!! If you put an LS1 at least mod it to make it worth your while time and money wise!

You'll need an LS1 k-member and an LT1 air induction to clear the stock hood. Obviously, you will need the LS1 PCM and wiring. Also, you'll have to go with an LS1 fuel tank and pump if you plan on running the returnless fuel system of f-body LS1s. However, you can get the fuel rails off of a '97 Corvette (which has a return line) and retain your LT1 fuel setup.

Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate the feedback. For the clearance of the air box, if I got an Ultra-Z hood would that help with clearance....maybe I could even take the air box and make it so that it is just like a RAM air or something with that hood.

Think that would work?

Thanks.

You may try calling Tennessee Auto Parts (formerly Stryker Auto Parts....Speed Automotive before that). They're an f-body salvage yard and one of their workers(Nathan) has an LS1 powered '93 Z-28 and another (Ryan) is in the middle of putting an LS1 in his '94 TA. They can also get you any part that you may need for the swap. I've heard of some bad dealings from out-of-state people, but I've never had any trouble dealing with them. I just walk in the shop, get what I need, and pay for it though...no shipping involved. Some have recommended talking to Josh to place an order b/c of bad experiences with Scott (the owner).

I guess a number would help. 800-368-0116 and 423-614-8888 are their old numbers, but I'm not sure if they are still in service. 423-614-5062 is a new number that was posted on a local message board, but I haven't called lately to know the deal.

I spoke to the guy who actually did the prototype LS1 installations for testing in '94-'95 Camaro's, and he has stated that the swap is relatively easy. You obviously need the PCM, LS1 K-member, harness, LT-1 type ram-air box, and a few other things I'm sure I've forgotten already. The LS1 does fit under the earlier 4th gen fenders/hood easily, except for the LS1 airbox setup.

Pricey mod as you already know, but pretty awesome. Good luck.

What exactly is that reason. It's not for more power, so why?

Sentimental reasons, also for show, some others as well, it's not going to be a drag car, just something that I want to be somewhat unique in my area that is fun to cruise around in
