LT1 to LS1 Conversion
LT1 to LS1 Conversion
I just recently purchased a Black 95 Z28 in MINT condition for 1,000 because the back seals on the motor are shot and leaks ALOT of oil, making the car non-drivable. Instead of fixin it I was thinking about an LS1 conversion since the motor has 150,000 miles on it anyway. Do you think I should just rebuild the LT1 or throw in the LS1 for about 4,000...well and a new tranny so add about 2,000 minimum to that number. I dont know too much about chevy and their motors since i've previously only worked on fords...and instead of hatin' on chevy i decided to work on one and see how i like it because I was in a brand new SS and it made me want to do a nasty Camaro. So please help me out here and let me know what you think. I hear LS1 is MUCH nastier than the LT1. Oh well we'll see, thanx.
Posts like this are hard to place, but they do not belong in "Advanced Tech". This is really more a matter of what you think is a cost-effective way to spend money.... has nothing to do with "technology".
Moving to LT1 Tech.....

I say just rebuild what you have...STROKE THAT BITCH!
The main reason I'm posting to your thread is to say, I love your username..."Downshiftndrift"!
I'm watching the Speed GT World Challenge, and your username is very fitting for the racing mood that I'm in right now!

I've heard that an LS1 conversion isn't as easy as dropping it in. I really don't remember the ins and outs of it , but something about the front Kmember being different, not enough clearance for the LS1. Maybe do a search over at Fbody.com at see what you can find. I think that's where I saw it.
k member
that guy is correct, the motor mounts are set farther back on the ls1 as apposed to the lt1. I think the frame is the same from 93-02, but the k-member is definatly diffrent. if you are to buy a ls1 off of e-bay make sure that it comes with the ecm.
Back whe nI was plainng to do the swap so far I was told
Wiring harness...
Tranny housing...
PCM...
And that's all I can remember the guys telling me off FbodyList.org
Biggest thing they said was the Wiring harness....

I do agree with the put it running, sell it and buy a 99.. but...
you can do the conversion... and what it would take to do a big stroker its more or less the same thing to drop a modded ls1...
Here it goes...
Gas tank... there is something different about it... either way you will have to drop it in favor of a 255lph.
PCM and harness, no biggie, always comes with the engine
K-member (just get a tubular one and save yourself a LOT of pounds with the change in engine and k-member.)
Fuel lines...
The rest is just work

I say a 396 LT4 or something.
If you buy a LS1 car you will have payments and higher insurance (depending on your age).
Use the payment money to build the stroker and have a nice sleeper and then be debt free when it comes to the car.
I love LS1's and all but I got my 96 in GREAT condition for $5k, once I am done with my B.S. I am going to build a stroker for it and not go LS1 car just yet because I would rather use the payment money for mod money.
I would not mess with droping an LS1 in, LT1's can be built to go very fast too
