LT1 intake porting & welding
what was in the quote was some of what lloyd said. He had never welded the aluminum runners like that before. He agrees that there is power to be gained by increasin the runner volume but was unsure of how much you'd see out of a heads/cam car.
Brook's is a stroker and so was jordans old set up.. Obviously they have more to gain.

I was asked if "porting an intake" would be beneficial and I replied that I felt that it would help pretty mucha any LT1 with a cam that is gonna turn 5500 RPM or more. I would "guess" porting the intake would be worth 5-10 HP.
have never raised the runners enough to have to weld them. I raise them as much as possible with out welding.
The next step (welding) would possibly help the right combination but having it welded ($100 ???) and then ported that much ($150-250) would be a pretty big investment.
Maybe some one has dynoed a car with a "stock intake" and then "ported intake" or a "ported intake" than a "welded and ported intake" with some info to see what the gain would be.
Bret Bauer might be a good person to ask. Jordon would probably be a good source too since he has actually done this before. i have not.

I actually have a LT4 intake at the Welders right now for this.
Basically anything you can do to get the intake to flow better with ported heads on is a good idea.
To do it right, you should strip the powder coat, sandblast the intake, weld up enough for the porting and to machine off the excess so it doesn't look like crap, port it and port match it and then re-powder coat it. To do it all right, a good welder a good machinest, a porter who knows what to do and someone to re-powder coat it. You can getto it up, but why? (that's just me though)
If you guys want I can try to get some pics of this up. After I get the intake done right before the powder coating and when it's all said and done.
A LT1 is much eaiser to do since you don't have to strip it first. Probably worth about $50-$100 less. I know what I charge for a intake for a motor, or a set of heads. I'd have to think about the cost on the intake only. LT1 being cheaper than LT4.
20 hp is a good amount to get, especially if everything else is done. On anything where you are going to have the heads flowing 270+cfm then you should probably have the intake ported too.

I've played with them in the past, but nothing terribly serious. Hopefully however, in the relatively near future I'll have some #'s before & after of an untouched LT1 intake --> ported w/ minimal welding & stock injector locations on one of our "normal" head/cam stock displacement cars
.
Still, for most people.. I don't see it being worth the $. Of course "most" people are making less than ~460sae hp. If you're out to make alot of power, I think the intake deserves some attention

Phil, I'm sure you've seen the flow gains from the intake being ported. Since the stock LT1 castings seem to have a CFM limit at about every lift measurement everything helps after a point.
On a side note, from the numbers you have posted or your customers have poster to a few other head porters and what I have seen on my bench there seems to be a physical limit to the LT1 port in terms of flow. Sometimes the ports are 185cc and sometimes they are 205cc but the different volumes and where that volume is helps different motors.

yeah im still undecided... keep talking people and help me decide... If i gain 5 flywheel Hp from this it'd be worth spending some cash on.
I have a Good/moderate heads/moderate cam, long tubes, m6, csi pump set up good for around 430-440 flywheel hp.
Like SStrokerAce said.. everything has a limit after a point... I'd really like to know what that point is.. Phil says its probably at 460hp...
Some of the others say less...

-SStrokerAce ya that would be great if you could post pic of the intake. what is the best way to port match i mean do you make a stencil or do you take points on the head to intake ?
My self i was just thinking of welding the intake to get gide of the ski jump and then port match it, i will send it out to a shop for the welding and i will do the porting.
There is a tone of heads and cam cars on there board with heads and cam 370+rwhp that would put them in the 430-440 sae range, people spend $300 on under drive pullys why not speend that money on the intake we all know it
and this is like a free mod in some way. Jordan is selling ported and weld intakes at $450 for a fully weld intake and ported.
I don't see how this could hurt, it should be a + at some point.

Taner that is the price for the work you have to send him youre intake. He said it would be only a few day for ture around you get the intake welded/egr welded/ ported to 58mmtb and intake port work send him a pm he will send you his web page on his prices for work.
I was thinking about send it down to him but i think i can do thind cheaper we will see

I wasnt really using ~460 sae as a 'limit' per-se, but more or less a point that I think you might start to see this work being worth the $. It doesnt seem to be too much of a problem to make 475-485hp with heads/cam/stock intake.. so I'd suggest spending $ on a better set of heads before spending $ on this.
Still, i think $75-100 in welding + $300-350 in porting is reasonable if the porter knows what they're doing
