LT1 Info

I have a 94 LT1 engine that I'm wanting to add some things to. I'm wanting 450-500 hp and need some of the pro's on here to help me get started. Emissions where I live don't matter but since this motor is going in a 98 s10 blazer I want it to be drivable and get "decent millage". I guess what I'm trying to ask is what up-grades can I make without touching the bottom end and keeping the reliability.
Thanks

What you are looking to do is very reasonable and pretty much describes my 1996SS. I use the car as a daily driver and it gets over 20 mpg and has 399 rwhp.

Here are the basics...
  • K&N FIPK
  • Granatelli MAF (no dyno info so don't know how much, if any, this is worth)
  • Holley 58mm tb (dyno numbers above were with a 52mm tb)
  • 1.6 roller rockers
  • $1800 labor for porting stock LT1 heads (i.e., good heads!)
  • LT4 HOT cam
  • AS&M 1 3/4 ceramic coated headers
  • Custom dual cat y-pipe
  • SLP two on the left exhaust
  • Accel 300+ ignition
  • Volt Blaster (since I'm borderline with the stock fuel system, this helps to give me a little margin)
  • Custom PCM tuning
  • Adjustable FPR (not really needed)

The car has other mods but those are the ones I can think of that could be considered to be related to hp numbers

Car now has the following instead...
  • Ceramic Coated Hooker long tubes
  • Mufflex y-pipe (no cat)
  • Mufflex 4" exhaust

There is a SOTP difference when I changed out to the above so if you do that to start with, you'll be closer (or for sure IMO) at your goal

Since I'm new to this stuff tell me what the following is.
Granatelli MAF
Custom PCM tuning
Cold air intake

I've seen several post talking about LT4 heads. What is the diffrence between stock LT4 heads and ported/polished LT1 heads?

Or a mail order tune (will get you close) a dyno tune is better.

for a near stock car i wouldnt even touch the mass air flow sensor or any of its components...

cold air intake
decent sized cam depending on drivability and aspirations
matching port job on your stock heads
supporting valvetrain
mid length or long tube headers
at least a 3" catback or true duals
one big sticker on your hatch window (seen the most rear wheel gain with this mod )

if you don't know what a cold air intake or tuning is I don't know if it is wise for me to suggest this, but I'd do a bigger cam.

at least a XE series, but I'm still slighty new to the internals game so my advice isn't golden.

(installing 847 tomarrow )

I understand the tuning aspect I'm just new to the LT1 seen. I'm convinced I will have to do something to my heads but need to know if I need LT4 heads or will porting/polishing my LT1 heads give me the same outcome. Several on this forum post quite a bit about the "Hot Cam" but I've seen several say it's not as hot as other cam options that are still very streetable. There's just so many angles here to look at and you guys have helped me get a good start. Also do I need to get a LT4 intake or have my LT1 intake polished?

I good set of ported LT1 heads will outflow stock LT4 heads. But the same guy porting LT4 heads can usually do better than if working with LT1 heads. So, LT4 heads would be better but only if you have additional port work done and that'll be a bit more expensive than just having a good port job done to a set of stock LT1 heads.
