hey guys, i just bought another fbody. its a 94 formula. bone stock a4. i want some instant power, and i was looking on ls1 speed.com, when i cam across the LT1 hot cam. with my new car being stock, i want to pick up just the cam. my question, is do i have to buy the rr's springs, locks and retainers? there is a huge price difference between just the cam, and the whole package. the hot cam has lift at .525/.525 and dur@.050: 218/218 LSA: 112 it says it will give me that lopey idle, and up to 30hp. what do you guys think?
First off, you will want the springs cuz that came pulls to about 6500 rpms and the stock springs aren't stiff enough and your valve train will float, probably not even making it to 6500. Second, the hotcam is only around a .494 lift cam without those 1.6 rr. You can use your stock locks and retainers even if you get new springs though. Also, I have the hotcam kit in my car and it isn't a "real" lopey idle. Depending on where your car is idled, you might not even be able to tell you have a cam. Finally, if you want to just put a cam in and not worry about the expensive rr's, check into the cc306 cam (comp cams). You will still need springs, but it has a big enough lift that it is over .500 even with the stock rockers. Hope this helps.

CC306 can be found practically anywhere. Try www.ftforce.com
The 306 is more of a supercharger/nitrous cam though...I'd advise an Xtreme 230/236 cam, which I was told is a much more 'streetable' cam.

how is the "304" LT1 Cam, 210 / 220 with 500 / .510 114 LSA? it says it will be okay with a stock car like my formula. i am looking for somthing that will be okay with a basically stock car or a mildly modded car like my T/A.

The cam you are talking about is usually referred to as the LT4 Hot Cam. Many people run this cam because you can buy it in kit form which also includes rockers and springs (albeit marginal ones). CMotorsports now offers cam kits as well, using their parts and CompCams camshafts.
The cams you are mentioning are all over the map. The CC306 is HUGE compared to a CC304. You need to do a little research before going any further. Decide on a cam that best suits your needs and decide on the rest of the parts needed from there.
Before diving into a cam upgrade though you need to really consider starting with the bolt-ons. You will not see near the full potential of a cam if you are still running stock cylinder heads, intake, exhaust, etc.
You should only rev as high as the engine makes power. There's no need to rev to 6500 RPM when the engine runs out of breath by 5800 (and with stock induction and manifolds that's what happens) There is also the limit that the stock bottom end can handle. Even if the heads and cam are making power at 7000 RPM, the rods do not typically live long under these conditions.
Start with the basics like a CAI, cat-back, headers, etc. and by the time you are ready for a cam you'll probably have a lot less questions
