LT1 Head porting Questions..
I ordered the deluxe porting kit from standard abrasives and the gasket removal kit.. So far thats all i have... What gaskets do i need?? Intake gaskets obviously... I know nothing about the inside of the engine and i went to projecttransam.com and saw the head porting you can do yourself thread and figured what the heck.. Also do i need to drain the radiator? New valves? any thing else? port matching intake aswell.. this even worth it? I lost to a mustang with a 347 and im guessing Nitrous, so im done fooling around, lol.. That will never happen again i can assure you. I need alot of help also on porting these.. is there anything i need to watch out for?? porting heads looked fairly easy. Definatly taking pictures and ill post them before and after so anyone whos is thinking of doing this can get a good idea of what they are facing..once again i know nothing about the insides of an engine..
any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks
PS: I forgot to mention I have like no money left, maybe about 40 bucks.. I already got a tb rebuild kit as well.. is there anything else i can accomplish while i have everything apart? ALSO***** do i need to disconnect my fuel lines??? couldnt i just push the whole thing aside??

dude do yourself a lot of research on the subject first. I mean a lot. I'm in the process of doing my heads and checked it out for awhile. It's not as easy as ya think. It'll take a good 20 to 30 hours. Go do a search and type in "port" and under name type in 97z-96 of do 1 and type in my name. You'll have a whole lot of things in there.
What you wanna do though is stay off the floor, raise the roof, don't widen the runners, skinny up the guides and open the bowls. Also smooth out the short side but not too much.
Get a good set of Fel-Pro gaskets.
Good luck.

Well, you'll need pretty much every gasket! Head gaskets, timing cover gaskets and seals (I assume you're changing the cam too), intake gaskets, and exhaust gaskets.
Yes, drain the radiator since coolant passes through the heads. You could just unbolt the fuel rail and move the whole assembly aside without disconnecting the fuel lines. But I found it easier to disconnect it and get it out of the way.
Since this is your first whack at porting heads, don't try to be John Lingenfelter on your first shot.
Port match, remove rough castings, and slightly open up the runners. Remove some of the excess material around the guides (don't hit them!) and open up the throat area under the valve seats.

Im sorry... runners guides.. what are you talking about????? Do you have like an exploded diagram of a head that shows me the parts of it?? I was going to port the intake to the size of the copper 1 5/8 in gaskets it have so they will be the same size as the headers.. What kind of intake gaskets do i need?? I already have a CC 304.. not messing with the cam. I could just clean the valves up right?? I dont need new ones do i? its hard to disconnect them and reconnect them huh?
No offense but you really need to do more reading before you try this. It isn't hard to hack up a head but it is hard to get really good numbers. I am not trying to discourage you, but please spend a few months reading everything you can get your hands on about head porting before you just drop a carbode bit into a head. Maybe read some books. There is a book by david visard called how to build small block chevy engines on a budget. it has some good basic info on head porting with some diagrams. I would recommend it to help you get a handle on what to do.
Good luck.

Not try to flame, but my last post on this was VERY basic. Kory's suggestion to do some research is a very good idea. BTW, you'll probably want to ditch the CC304 if you're looking to dust your modded Mustang buddy.
Dude like I said do some reseach. Go to the Standard Abrasives web site they have a DYI section. First of DO NOT, I repeat, do not port the exhaust side just polish it. You want that step from the exhaust port to the headers for back pressue. They are right, I did a month of reseach and got stacks of printouts and I still feel I coulda done better.
Yeah raise the roof (valves facing down like on the block) on the intake side. Don't take anything off the walls. Just clean it up. The exhaust side you just wanna polish. I mean POLISH. Down to 320 grit.
