Hi guys, i am looking at a LT1 that is supposed to have a 383 in it and i am not sure what heads are on it...without pulling the valve cover before i buy it as its an auction, i noticed that there is a stamping W1 on the front corner...does this ring any bells? its in the same place as "243, 799" etc on LS heads

AFAIK, the only thing that will help you identify stock heads is the casting number under the valve cover.

 

thats what im thinking but if anyone can confirm if there is anything on the front corner it would be great as im not near a LT1 car now(at work)

 

I just took a look at my car and might see the "W" or "M" that you speak of right by the front most exhaust manifold bolt and near the ignition module and know my car has the 374 heads which is of course the early LT1 stock casting.

But I certainly wouldn't rely on this digit as confirmation as having any specific LT1 casting just that you have some form of a GM casted head
