LT1 Head gasket question

My son just blew a head gasket on his 1997 Z/28. Is there a good guide somewhere on the steps needed to R&R the heads???

If I have it done by someone else, about how much will be looking at for this job.

I am a resonable mechanic but it looks pretty cramped under his hood to pull the heads.

Re: LT1 Head gasket question

http://afrashteh.com/guide/install.htm

Ignore the cam R&R on this install guide,

Its not hard at all.

Pull the exuast, un plug the wiring harness, pull the intake, pull the head, (make sure to loosen in order), use thread sealant and put it all back together. If you pull the passenger side, you will have to take out , two power steering bolts and 3-4 bolts holding the bracket to the head. You will also need four new coolant steam pipe seals(pt# 10108689). New head bolts( I would use the ARP ones from Summit racing, $50)

Thumbs up Re: LT1 Head gasket question

I'm in the middle of doing this right now and it is, for a first timer, a little difficult, but nothing I don't think a mechanically inclined person could do.

I called HPE here in Houston and the labor cost alone for a head gasket replacement was $850. O'Reiley sells a head gasket set with all the gaskets needed for this job for $150. (Intake, heads, echaust, RTV sealant, etc.)
