LT1 eating 1L oil/500km and low on power

It's a friend of mine's 95 Camaro Z-28. It's also only running in power when cold. When it warms up loses a lot of power, feels lame.

1. Does he need an engine internal overhaul? Are there OEM/GM kits available that would cover everything needed, including gaskets and everything needed to do the job?

2. Can he install a 383 conversion to fix the problem and get a boost at the same time? Can such a kit run on a stock engine without any other mods?

3. Any recommendations for some other solution that what I've already thought about?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. How much oil can an engine take before it starts meaning something needs fixing inside?

The only reasonable option is to take it to a reliable mechanic with diagnostic equipment and have a thorough analysis done. Once you know what the problem(s) are then go about deciding what to do and how to do it. It will do you little good to ask what to do unless you can be very specific. JMHO

Engines can run for a LONG time burning oil, won't get the greatest mpg but it can run like that for a long time and be allright. Just have to change plugs a little more often.

Well me and my friend were more interested about fixing it then how long it can run like this. He's not verry happy about the power loss.

We tried asking some local mechanics but they're too money hungry to tell us anything but "you need a new engine" or "sure, we'll replace everything for 5000$". That's why I'm asking here

Yep, no way to 'fix' that but a rebuild. So live with it or cough up a chunk of change.

You say eating oil, so I assume there is nothing on the engine itself or any leaks on the ground? If it truely is burning that much oil then you should see blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, if that's the case then you need to do compression checks first.

No leaks, lots of white/blue smoke coming out (exhaust pipe white too). Compression is probably shot, hence the poor performance when warm.

--> So where does one look for a rebuild kit, what's the $ range, and can we put in a 383 kit instead of a rebuild kit ? I found some on ebay for 1000$ ish
