lt1 in distress! Coolant leak kills steering??
lt1 in distress! Coolant leak kills steering??
I was driving home today, just now, andi noticed the steering wheel difficult to turn. I parked my car soon after and there was coolant leaking from it, a lot. Thank God it didnt overheat. Its night time, and i have no idea where the leak is coming from. I managed to get coolant on top of the curved intake pipe (that goes into the throttle body).
Is there anyway coolant can kill the power steering pump? I have adequate power steering fluid. It has become extremely difficult to turn the wheel in a matter of, like 2 minutes of driving!

If the coolant got on the belt, it could be slipping. If so, you will experience charging problems soon if you don't take care of the leak. More than likely, the fans are flipping the coolant into places it would never be other wise.
As if that weren't bad enough, plug wires don't like antifreeze. After you get the leak fixed, check under the hood one night with all the lights off and the engine running. Probably gona see a light show.
Good luck

I had a very minor water pump weep hole leak. Just after start up if I tried to turn the wheel I couldn't. It took a min for the belt to dry and not slip. I replaced mt pump over a year ago and I have yet to have the probalem again.

I had that problem but its because a coolant line retaining clamp wore out, I just put a new hose clamp on it
So check your lines first. While the car is running just probe around the area with a screwdriver lightly trying to see if there is any play with the hoses thatll cause a leak.
If you do this wear glasses, I didnt and coolant sprayed in my eye, not pleasant.

Same here, in the morning or after the car would sit for a while, it would be hard to turn as i was backing out of the driveway, cause my water pump was leaking pretty good. Changed the waterpump, opti, plugs, wires, coil and every thing is cool now. So yeah its just water getting on the belt from it dripping down onto the balancer
Re: lt1 in distress! Coolant leak kills steering??
Ive got a waterpump leak. After the car is running for a minute or two, it starts pouring from the bottom left (driver side). I removed that stupid intake elbow to get a better look, i could not see a pipe down there. I didnt look from underneath because i didnt want to get sprayed with coolant.
Im thinking its most likely a pipe that i cant see, given the location of the leak. Does that sound right?
This is my second rebuild waterpump, are these known to break down in a couple of months?

Stop buying remans and buy a new one. That is, if that turns out to be your problem. You can search the problem much better if you put die in the coolant. Then you use one of the new led flashlights that are slightly blue in color. The leak will show up like a sweatshirt at a wedding. The die will be helpful later on too if you ever have another leak.
The one place that I find leaks a lot is the hoses going to the heater core. The OEM crimps around the restrictor or where the hard and soft lines meet, often weaken or corrode. I take a hacksaw to the OEM crimps without damaging the restrictor. Then get some new hose from any auto parts store and some worm clamps and your set.
