Lt1 crank hub HELP!!!

I removed the crank hub off and didn't mark reference points to the timing cover to mark where to install it so it would be at the stock position for balancing purposes the factory used. What are my options, is there a mark on the crank or a reference point I can use to line it up.

Thanks Mark TIsdale

btw, does anyone have one for sale...

You can put the hub/balancer on in any position. The only benefit to putting it back on a certain way would be to mark TDC. If you want to put the motor at TDC on #1 cylinder then put the hub back on with the arrow pointing up.

The hub and crank pulley are neutral (zero) balanced from the factory. Balancing was done using the flexplate/flywheel.

If any weights were pressed into the pulley (installed into the holes around the perimeter area) from the factory, then fine tuning of the rotating assembly balance was performed. If you don't see any weights, the hub can go on in any direction. I never "counted" on the TDC arrow away, there's nothing to keep the hub from turning other than a press fit (hub isn't keyed).

Many engines were "hot balanced" which is more the less an after thought balancing done to fine tune the balance job after the engines were fired at the factory(on propane).......some harmonic balancers weren't drilled or weighted much past Zero "if any" and can be installed any which way, but if you've got one that's had a bunch of holes drilled into the balancer to help out a lousy factory balance job(iv'e seen SEVERAL this way).......and If you diddn't mark it(and many commonly think that you don't need to)you "may" have to install the balancer, and if you don't feel any new engine vibrations, Great, and if you do happen to incurr some new vibrations....install the balancer 1/4 turn from where it was last installed, and so on , until the vibrations subside........Not having ALL the LT1 balancers (true Zero balanced) was just one more blunder GM made with the "keyless" Harmonic balancer LT1-LT4's........heres some info about it under "Hub and Balancer" http://www.automotiverebuilder.com/ar/ar99928.htm Joe

Well heres the deal I got a buddy that is sending me a hub cause the other one was kinda damaged... The hub is drilled just like my hub... I guess I am going to install it when I get it anywhere, then if vibrations occurs rotate it 1/4 till it is fixed... any thoughts???

just a tip when installing the hub, put it in the oven for a while or heat it up with a torch, it will slide right on and you won't risk damaging the threads in the crank like i almost did, haha

Why don't you just install the hub and find a crank pulley that doesn't have any 'balancing' done to it and be done with it. Does your crank pulley have holes drilled in it?

yes the hub that came with the car had the holes drilled in it. I am getting one from someone that has the holes drilled to try and get it close to the old setup...
