Question LT1 carburated intake

I bought a LT1 long block to put in my 70 nova and i'm getting rid of the optispark ignition in favor of a mechanical advance distributor. The motor had no harmonic balancer when i bought it just the clover with three holes where it is mounted. Can I use a harmonic balancer off of my original 1970 motor or one off of a new LT1? How is the timing going to work???

Thanks

Re: LT1 carburated intake

i carbed an LT1 before and I kept the original balancer so I could use the original pulley system. gotta have that A/C. With an older balancer, you cannot use the original bracketry. to find my timing mark, I set the timing chain to dot to dot. put the cover on. put the balancer on and marked a "0" (zero) on the pulley to go along with an aftermarket timing tab you can find at autozone. then you could get one of them timing guns with the adjustable light, set it to the timing you want, then adjust your distributor to match 0 on your timing tab.

You can also get an aftermarket balancer for it that has timing marks on it. There are several companies making them now.
