LT1 Build

Hey i am thinking about buying a LT1 (when i have money) to put into my 1977 Cutlass Supreme.... my cousin says it is easy and cheap, i was wondering how easy and cheap it is to build one up to around 425hp i just registered to this site and don't know alot about these engines.... All i know is i want alot of power cheap without NOS. can some one give me some examples of the cost of building what i want? thanks

Re: LT1 Build

425hp cheap and easy, you'd be better off with an Olds 350 or 455.
LT1's are anything but cheap and a lot of times anything but easy
I like Olds motors anyways though

Re: LT1 Build

lt1's are not bad. most of the parts are interchangeable from any other roller small block. a 77 cutlass supreme? anyway, it's not too bad. plan on 2500 for a rebuild and some performance parts.

Re: LT1 Build

Well i think i seen on ebay some buy it nows for some ls1's all though some where from the caprice's and stuff for like $900-$1,400..... but would those be ok, they claim to run. i was told they are 2 bolt mains? how strong are those blocks any ways i have a 350 4 bolt main block at my house (chevy) would i be able to use it i don't know the year of it. and then i could buy a stroker kit for like $800 to make it a 383. would i be able to use ls1 heads amd intake and stuff on it? I am pretty new to this LS1 but i was told i should do this. All i know is i would like to get 400hp at least and alot of torque. But i also want to make sure the engine will last awhile i plan to drive it daily.

Re: LT1 Build

Its most likely going to be cheaper with a generation 1 block. Do not get a ebay motor. I made that mistake once, and only once Just stick with the old school.

Re: LT1 Build

How strong are those LS1 Blocks? They are 2bolt mains? I don't really have a clue about those motors... I was going to build a 383 from a 350 block i have which is a 4 bolt main, although i don't know if it is usable yet. What parts are interchangable with the LS1 and the old block(like my block)? Could i just use the stock ls1 heads, intake and other parts so that it will be fuel injected, and durable... i am worried about getting a ls1 and the block isn't strong enough to last long. thank you

Re: LT1 Build

I don't believe any LS1 Gen3 part will interchange with your older Gen1 block. A 2-bolt main LT1 or LS1 motor will handle well over the hp you are wanting to achieve. 4-bolt mains are over-rated IMO. I like the throttle response and the tunability of the EFI motors, not to mention the durability with the roller cams/lifters, etc in the LT1 and LS1 motors. They are not that difficult to learn if you already know the basics on the Gen1 carb'd motor. Just need a laptop and some scan tool software and its a piece of cake, in fact its easier I think because the ECM almost tells you whats wrong.

Re: LT1 Build

Put an LS1 in it. There is MORE bang for the buck and more potential for less money.
LT1's are expensive to make the same/same FWHP with an LS1.

Re: LT1 Build

I wouldnt waste the money that the LT1 would require, and the hassle of the F.I. harness. Go carbed big block. I had a 455 in a 72' C10 shortbed pickup, with a stock block, untouched off the shelf heads/cam/intake It dynod well over 425hp/500lbs/tq through a th400.

Re: LT1 Build

Man....where is the LT1 love at?. Ive actually thought it either evened out when trying to build high hp motors weather it be LSX or LTX motor. Or since the cost of parts for the LTX is cheaper. Is it proper to say that biulding a high hp LTX is cheaper in the long run?.

Question Re: LT1 Build

Well now ever since watching all these videos of these camaros... i should just save my money and buy one... I always liked them but that means my cutlass won't be doing anything but sitting... My cutlass wouldn't handle good anyways. Well what usually goes wrong with those LT1/LS1 camaros besides the opti spark thingy... ( i am still unsure of what i want to do now) Well so far this forum has helped me... and has gotten me interested in camaros well more then i allready was. Anything else you guys can tell me about these engines... any problems with those stock 93-02 camaros? Thanks again
