For a 383 you will at a minimum need to have the cylinder bore.
In most cases the block will need to be machined down by the pan rail so the rod bolts will clear. Some didn't have to clear for that but others have.
Forr a 396 the same will need to be done and in most cases there will need to be clearance in the cam area for the rods. A lot of people run a small base circle cam with 396 setups.

Actually there is a lot of things that should be done to make it last so I definately do a search.
